Bottlecap hits with the DD/SEF coils

Larry (IL)

Well-known member
A question has come up about how much of a problem the DD/SEF coils with the MXT has been with bottlecaps. Concentric coil users don't seem to have the same problem, but DD coils are well known for the bottlecaps sounding like a quarter. What are your experiences and what do you do about it. Does the Iron% help. I don't hunt with the MXT and Nancy does not use the DD coils so we are in the dark here.

I have found that to be exactly the case sometimes Larry. I often hunt with my 6x10 and D2 and sometimes get quarter range ( low to mid 80's ) VDI signals that turn out to be bottlecaps.I have not tried switching to prospecting mode to check iron probability % yet but it's a great idea. It did cross my mind on my last hunt when I ran into this but for some reason I haven't concentrated on figuring out a solution till you mentioned it. I'm not sure if it happens consistently or only in certain areas but I will be paying closer attention and taking mental notes. I'll let you know what I find out.

Well we all know bottle capa and pull tabs are a problem. If we didn't have them to contend with we'd all find more good stuff.
I've only been hunting with the MXT and a 6x10 for a little over a year and hit those bottle cap / quarter signals a LOT.
The best way I've found to ID the bottle caps is when I get a Quarter signal I back my coil up to where the tip is just behind where I think the "quarter " is and check swing a few times as I move forward over the target. I watch the VDI. If it is a quarter it will still show in the 80's if not it will drop down into the negatives. At any rate it won't stay up in the quarter range.
I still dig a bunch of them darn caps though.. Just to make sure it still works.
And you never know until it's out of the ground.
I hope this works for some of you also.

Kepp up the search and HH

I don't know yet I'm still new with the dd coil but I'm glad you made this post.
Reason is I did get out in my yard a few mins before dark yesterday (it was to hot to go any where else) and several times I thought I might have been lucky and found my first silver with the high vdi numbers and all turned out to be bottle caps.
I thought that was odd because as I recall with my 950 all the caps vdi numbers was much lower so at least now I know it's not my mxt going nuts.
Look forward to all the answers and tips on this subject.

With the 6X10 one can often move the coil just off the side and the display will change to indicate a bottle cap. Also, after reading some of the other posts it occurs to me that if one would toggle into relic mode it should give an audible sound for trash - I'll try that the next time I'm out.

I call it edging, just taking the the very edge of the coil over the pin-pointed area, if its a cap it will show iron.

I use a 10x12 sef coil, I serch in the relic mode SW. forward no discrimination most of the time, what seams to work for me most of the time, I flip it into
coin mode with with SW forward and Coriss cross it at a90 degrees the sound will break up usually in one direction some times both directions, but i will
try the other way about moving coil forward and rechecking reading that sounds pretty good also. thanks for the info.

How about the DX-1 on bottlecaps with the MXT? On my V3, I seem to get a more true VDI reading with the DX-1, especially when probing down in the hole. I might get a maybe signal with the DD coil and after I break the ground, I stick the DX-1 in there and if the VDI goes negative, I fill it back in and move on.

Larry-----Thats a "trick" that Patsy & I have used on steel bottle cap I.D. with DD coils for some time now.---I think it will work on any detector useing a DD coil.----We do that with the "F" series Fishers.-----If the in-line nulls out, the chances are it's a steel bottle cap.----The only thing you have to be careful of is that if it's a deep target (coin) and the in-line don't pick it up--not thinking it's a steel bottle cap in that case.---That's where the depth guage comes in. ----One other "trick" that I like--when I hit a "suspected" bc, I'll raise the coil a little--if it drops into a low tone, it's almost always a steel bottle cap.---I like the "edgeing" (on the coil) idea---that's one I haven't tried.-----Thanks for posting my question I asked you Larry---I've learned something here.---Hope somebody else got something out of it also.-------Regards, Del

Glad to help Del, the guys and gals on here are great with the helpful tips and tricks. You will have to get that MXT Pro you want and stick around for a while.........

The bottlecaps are no problem with the V series, we still get the quarter audio with the DD coils, but the frequency bars on pinpoint and Analyze gives it away. Bottlecaps will have the 22.5 frequency dominate while a quarter will show the 2.5 dominate.

This is great info. i continue to dig far too many bc. Thanks.

Thanks for asking that question Del and for posting it Larry. After I first read the post I was really wondering why I hadn't already confronted this problem myself to figure out a solution. I realized that as soon as I get a decent signal in that VDI range, I'm thinking quarter but my mental checklist always goes straight to the possibility of it being a silver ring or similar and I start digging. I'll be adding what I've learned from this thread next time and hopefully be leaving those BC's in the ground. Thanks everyone for sharing your info and tips.

I run into that as well. When I see a solid VDI of 77, I'm already thinking bottlecap, and 90% of the time it is a rusted, shallow BC. But, depending on whether they are rusted or new, how deep, whether they are bent, folded, crown up or down, they come in all across the board.

I just dig them all, With a pinpointer, they are easy and fast to find. Plus, there has been several cases where there has been another good target next to them that was masked by the Bottlecaps.

Don't get me started on FOIL, though. People don't throw anything into the garbage can anymore, it seems like.

You got that right!---Twelve steps to the garbage can is just to much to ask of some people.----How about that new aluminum lookin "liner" thing their throwing around now-a-days?----One guy called it the "pulltab of the 2000's"------Fortunately, I don't run across too many of them (yet). -------Del

Del those foil liners are straight from hell. The ones I run into are usually easy to identify at least, before digging. When they're fully spread open my MXT overloads if I even get near them. Aargghh !!! Use the trash can people !

I've been on the beach for the past week and was digging too many bc's with my MXT. I read these posts and started experimenting with the so-called 'edging' technique described above. I was able to get an iron / (-) VDI reading on suspected bc's almost everytime. Since I'm new, I still dug em to make sure but the techinique was effective and accurate for me. Thanks for the info. I REALLY learned something that i could quickly use. :usaflag: EJ
