Bottlecap and nail

I've been having a bit of trouble when a bottlecap and nail are real close together. One of the sites I hunt has a lot of both. It seems that the nail "pulls" the bottlecap signal so that it sounds like an iffy, but diggable target. I have my iron mask set at -16 so I can check things out w/ a clear screen in these situations. When I switch to iron mask I can usually tell that it's a nail changing the bottlecap signal. Just wondering if there are any other tricks to tell when a signal is being affected by another nearby target.
Thanks
