Bottle caps. Is any one dig bottle caps anymore?

So I used to dig tons of old (not alum) Bottle caps and I have no Idea why. Now I see them but hardly ever (if never that) get a hit on a bottle cap unless I am hunting with the screen open in the bottom half. Is there any coin or target you can think of that hits close to a bottle cap? The reason I ask this is that where I used to have some trouble with other machines and seeing lots of bottle caps, essentially I see absolutely no reason to have them even close in the open target area or should I just say...no reason to check them anymore!? Now the pull tab is a different situation as gold rings are in the same similar range.

Now the bigger question'; why are the V-3 guys talking about how they can tell a bottle cap from a quarter. I don't even know why that should be a worry anymore.
Larry I am not trying to start anything so calm down I am just having a chat over here in the Dark side and seeing what others think about that.

Now if you can tell the diff between a ring and a pull tab... that's something to be talkin about.

I'm new to the E-Trac but am digging so nice sounding aluminum screw caps that come around 12 / 45

Gday,

I realise that you are mostly interested in US coins Utah but...
In Australia -Yep, unfortunately $1 and $2 coins can be the same as (some) screw caps.
Etrac users still dig em up and curse.

This is something that you may know already and it is not perfect but kind of works for me with both my Xterra and Etrac...
the way that i have worked out to tell the difference is on single, shallow targets and by the signal tone drop off
when the edge of the coil travels past a shallow coin edge it gives a sharper beep drop off than with a screw cap .
ie a coins edge signal drops off sharper and distinctly
The sound is quite subtle and sometimes if my concentration is not good enough I dig more.
Sweep speed also comes into it and some experimentation is neccessary to work this out.
With target depth comes more variability and uncertainty...also with coins on edge etc.
( a week ago I dug 37 screw caps from quite deep at one site, so when the target is deep it doesn't work for me )

[size=small]I don't mind bottle caps,
especially the older style.
They have not been generally used for many years.
In my experience, I find where you find older style bottle caps
silver is also apt to be about.

Yikiees, We do some aluminum caps that come up once in a while or wine bottle caps but I hardley ever dig em. Wonder if I am not hunting enough newer areas? anyway...Im sure there are lots of other coins besides the US that do have 12 47s. Thanks for telling me about the drop off Ill give it a go.

Rusty crown caps are a big fat pain:rant: with the V and the F-75 at some sites. They imitate a quarter signal very well with said machines and a few others not mentioned. However with the E-Trac and Explorer they are a non issue.I do dig quite a few while hunting with the E-Trac but that is only because they are in the same hole with a good target:thumbup:
I know,I know, if you learn your machine well enough you can tell the difference they will exclaim! Yea right and what does a rusty crown cap have in common with a quarter to be able to fool so many machines???????
They are both round

I have learned enough about my machine to know that I dont have to learn the difference between them. I would however like to be better at telling a pull tab from a gold ring. Hum might have to work on that a bit right now...shovelhead out!

For me the old rusty bottle caps (1940's and older) that took the "bottle opener" to get off will give a nickle sound the first time you swing over it. Now the numbers will ride a lot higher on the Fe. Like 17 to 21. When you do your 90, the it will Null out for me. In TTF you get good hit both ways but again numbers will be like 17-13 and on the ninety will be like 01-13. Just seems about standard for me.

The screwcaps that look like the old bottle caps come in like an IH for me. I dig those, as well as the aluminum screw tops. Those darn things at 7" sound just like silver to me.
