The ghost town of Bodie is owned in it's entirety (land, buildings, artifacts; everything) by the state of California. It is a State Historic Park. There are BLM rangers stationed there contiuously (not sure about the winter though). They give tours and answer questions from the tourists about the history and everything about the town. Therefore, taking ANYTHING from there is against the law. You can and will be cited, fined, incarcerated, and your vehicle and everything in it confiscated if you are caught taking or damaging anything (if they think it is a serious enough offense).
I used Gettysburg as an example. I'm not sure what they call the actual battlefield but it's protected by very serious federal laws against removing anything. As it should be, it's hallowed ground. In the surrounding area there are private lands ajoining the battelfield. These you can detect, with the owners written permission. The ground at the Little Big Horn is another example. No detecting or collecting of anything allowed. Now, these are federal lands, not state. But the same principles apply to Bodie or any other protected historic site.
