I found a large pendant/earing (not sure which because I've never found a earing with a loop attachment like this) that I thought was gold but it had rust colored (not green) spots all over it, kind of like what I saw in the photo, but they came off when I scratched my fingernail over them. I looked at it under a loop and didn't see any markings so I tossed it. But it sure had the look of gold and I'm sure it wasn't plated. I think it's still in my garbage can. Anyway, because of the storm that moved down the east coast, I found it lying on top of the sand along with several coins and another piece of junk jewelry. I found lots of crusted coins in this area but no gold. I really thought the area was ripe for the pickings, lol. But I'm wondering if I should fish that piece out of the garbage can. BTW, what did you use to clean that piece up with? Thanks.
Jerry

I've recovered gold jewelry underwater that was in holes with iron spikes and nails that was covered in rust. A few pieces looked like rusty iron jewelry because they had been coated with rust from the iron they were under.

One very nice piece turned out to be 22k gold.

Could be your ring was sitting in a crevice for a long time with iron junk on top of it and ended up with patches of contact rust.

Get that ring out of the trash and examine it more closely.

I also recommend never throwing "junk" jewelry away. I have saved all my pieces of junk jewelry over the years and recently I went through it all. I discovered three pieces that were actually silver but thought were junk because they looked weird.

This is what happened to me a few weeks ago. Was testing a new solution for my electrolysis set up. Grabbed 2 junk rings out of my junk box, one only weighed .5 grams and was so tarnished you could not find a mark. It turned out to be .925 silver, and another is silver between .500 and .800 by my test. It also had some initials on it maybe of the person who made it. A test kit is well worth the money. Not all Jewelry is marked. Here are some pics. of the rings.
