I really didn't intend to derail this thread.
So on that note, yes, water, food, good digging tool, gloves to keep the blisters off my hands from digging, time, strong back patience... all good suggestions, and yes, even requirements. I do use maps and gps for certain kinds of finds; written permission if on private land, or park rules if it's public land - been confronted several times by rangers that "interpret" the law; and I have found out their interpretation is inaccurate, so keeping the official print from the parks department helps stop problems. Boots in the trunk help keep my honey off my case about muddy shoes.
