Blackmax 5.3 vs 950 coil

Eric

New member
I managed to get another mint classic III and bought a blackmax 5.3 coil for it. Is there much depth loss compared to the 950 loop? In fact I prefer the smaller coils over the larger ones but never tested the differences in depth. I love how solid the classic detectors are.

Thanks, Eric

Hi Eric

I have the BlueMax 350, 5.3 Bullseye, 8 in. ProScan and 950 coil. The 5.3 Bullseye/ Blackmax (same coil) is the one I use most on my IDX Pro modified......... the others have their place in my coil collection. The 5.3 is plenty deep in the nail beds, ie. old house tear-downs, relic and church/picnic grove type sights that I hunt in. It just does a super job in the trashy sites, and is almost as deep as the 950 coil.

I agree. The 5.3 is a nice balance of fighting target masking, depth and coverage area. It has been the coil I use the most for a very long time. Even when the philosophy was the bigger the coil the better, I was liking the Blue max 600. Pinpointing was easier also. I guess you could say I cut my detecting teeth with that size coil.

Does anybody have a 950 coil that they are willing to sell? Been lookin' for one... I have a couple of places that no longer have targets in them according to my 8" on my Classic ID.

Try the Detector Accessory Clasified secton towards the bottom of the page, I'll bet you can find one there if you ask around.

then either there are no targets left, or what is there is likely masked by shallower trash (rejected targets).

If you're using your Classic ID at maximum Sensitivity and the least Discrimination you can tolerate (9-o'clock setting or less), the you might want to toggle to the All Metal mode and check the area.

If you're getting targets there in All metal that are iron or small, low-conductors such as foil, then a smaller coil would be the way to go, as well as removing some of that masking trash.

If you're certain the site is void of targets you can hit with the 8", and there isn't a trash issue, then forget the 950 coil. There is very little difference in depth between the 6

Thanks for the info Monte! I have turned the sensitivity all the way up, discrimination all the way down, dug all targets, but I haven't tried all-metal mode...The area I'm talking about is my front yard. The only reason I am pursuing this is because I can bury a dime at 7" and not hear a thing...It also seems like my yard is higher than both neighbors by 4" or so. I was going to do new grass seed next year and level the ground. Maybe I'll rent a sod-cutter and remove the top 4" of soil just for the heck of it!
