blacking out the screen

yes, yes. Blacking out is disciminating and just means you won't hear what the detector is detecting. Something causes that to be slower than just hearing what is detected (IE. iron, pulltabs, etc). I think you can pick up nuances of tone by leaving the screen open but it can be mentally fatiguing in trashy areas.

If your program is made exactly the same as an iron mask setting, it will have the same effect.
If your program has more area blacked out, yes it will cause more nulling.
Nulling isn't necessarily a bad thing as the Explorer does well at reporting a good signal while in null.
Too much blacking out of the screen over in the non-ferrous section can cause a non-report of a good target.

What disc or IM can do is eliminate not only unwanted tagets, but also EMI and mineral noise... especially if you are using high sensitivity. You just dont realize how much MORE noise you get with high sensitivity especaially at slower sweep speed. I agree with Steve that nullling isnt always a bad thing.... i sometimes hunt with a pattern in really trashy areas when i just cant stand all the sounds and it works very well. I think when it comes to nulling for me its more important that i hear it, and not be running slient, so i can distinguish iron bounce from a good targets without looking at the screen.
