Black Widow Wireless Headphones for the XP DEUS

I recently purchased an XP Deus with the WS4 Backphones but due to severe hearing loss in one ear, I knew I wouldn't be happy with them. I have used Black Widow Headphones for years with all my other detectors, so I set out to convert them to work with the Deus. I won't go into all the details, but suffice it to say they appear to work perfectly.

The plan was to attach the Electronic Control from the WS4 Backphones to the Control Side of the Black Widow Headphones and to make the headphone cable removable so I could still use the Black Widows with my other detectors.

Parts:
(Qty 1) - 3 Pin Miniature Microphone Connector (Male/Female Pair) (VUPN8217.
(Qty 3) - #6-32 x 1/2" Stainless Pan Head Machine Screws
(Qty 3) - #6-32 Stainless Nylon Insert Locknuts.
(Qty 3) - Rubber standoffs made from tubing that would go over the screws.
All the parts from the adapter side of the WS4 Backphones with the exception of the speaker.
Wire, solder, hot glue and sealant as required.

I removed the adapter side of the Backphones (which destroyed them) but you can buy a replacement Backstrap for around $20. I removed the speaker by cutting the wires and used the outside ring to mount to the side of the Black Widows. I drilled (3) 1/8" holes equally spaced in the ring and after figuring how to mount them to keep the control unit in the proper position, I drilled corresponding holes in the side of the headphones. I also drilled a 1/8" hole for the two wires that will come from the adapter.

I cut two wires about 6" long and soldered them to the two terminals in the adapter. I ran the wires through the hole and into the headphones. I then soldered wires to the same places the existing red and white wires connected to inside the Black Widows. I used hot glue to make sure the wires stay attached to the adapter and I used silicone sealant to fill the hole. Use the screws and nuts to attach the ring to the headphones. I used the rubber standoffs between the ring and the headphones for added support. The adapter attaches to this ring with three posts and hopefully will be all that's needed. I tested the XP Deus, and the new Wireless Black Widow Headphones worked great.

Next, I cut the headphone cable just inside the headphones, and removed the strain relief and existing cable; this was not an easy task. I had to resort to using a dremel tool to cut away at it until I could get it out. I then had to enlarge the hole towards the outside so the nut to the miniature connector would work. I soldered the three wires (black, white and red) to the chassis part of the connector. Be sure to put the nut on the wires, and the washer on the connector before soldering. I then attached the male miniature connector to the three wires of the cable making sure to match the colors. I also had to use the dremel tool to cut a small slot in the headphones to miss the nut so the sides would snap back together (this was on the inside so you won't notice it). I put the headphones back together, and now I have Black Widow Headphones I can use Wired or Wireless.

I'm sure this will void the warranty on the Black Widow Headphones, but to me, it was worth the risk. All I need to do now is to come up with a cap for the connector while I'm running wireless. I would have liked to have made the adapter plate fit closer to the headphones, but this turned out acceptable and hopefully will work fine. When the WS4 Controller is not on the headphones, you can use one of the foam ear pieces to cover the adapter.

Time will tell how well this modification works. I have only used the Deus about 1 hour in my yard, and I managed to find a Civil War era button that I have missed with all my other detectors. This is really encouraging. Hopefully I'll get to try it in the real world soon now that I can hear the signals. If you need to modify anything to make your detecting easier, don't be afraid to try. I had to document what I did in case I need to do it again, so I thought why not share it here.

nice job.. I am currently using the ws4's and am looking at alternatives for full size wireless headphones to use myself..

If you buy the $22 adapter clip from XP and a 1/8" to 1/4" plug adapter you can plug your Black widows (or whatever ) into the Deus and use them without any modifications or warranty cancellation whatever.
Is the cord being present that big a deal ? I don't care much for the CTX wireless module because it's so bulky but the XP module fits in the tiniest of pockets plus it's a controller as well.

I bought two of the $22 adapters when I bought the Deus, and I already had several 1/4" to 1/8" adapters. My Black Widow headphones are over 10 years old so I wasn't worried about the warranty. I love the wireless feature of the CTX even though I have to fight the cord in the brush. I just figured since the Deus was wireless, why not go completely wireless. Now I have a choice. I'm just trying to show another option for those who are interested. I have many other sets of headphones to use with the adapters.

Well, I took the XP Deus on its first relic hunt today. The headphones without a cord were awesome. I thought it would be good not having the cord, but it turned out even better than I had imagined. I went to a "hunted out" spot where I take all my "new" detectors, but I rarely find anything. Today, I found 16 bullets, 2 Spencer casings and some coins. I think I'm on to something. Some of the bullets were between 10" and 12" deep, but most were around 8". How did I miss these with my Minelab CTX 3030 and the Garrett ATX? Maybe it was just blind luck, but I see some amazing finds in my future with the 2 pound 3.1 ounce XP Deus.

Very cool! I'm gonna have to read it a time or two to let it sink in, but what you did looks like its working well! :clapping: I like full phones too..sooner rather than later, I bet all mid/top shelf rigs go 'wireless' to the phones...why wouldnt they right? easy to see the advantages, and the tech is there...Good job and thanks for the post!:beers:
Mud.

A job well done !

I know when you came in for the Deus that you said you had some pounded sites you were going to try it out at and even you were not sure what was left . . . . looking at the photos of your finds, it looks like the Deus more than held it's own in a site that other high end units had gone through.

Keep posting your finds and next time you swing by the shop, we'd love to see some of the relics you are pulling.

Thats a very interesting conversion of those headphones, would you actually gain any advantage using the Black Widows over the WS5 full cup headhones ??? i use the WS5 ones and must admit i am rather pleased with them, they cut out most external noises and this will allow me to hear those real deep whisper tones of which i am after.

Rather than modify the Black Widows could you have not used them by using the Deus adaptor for the WS4 backphones that would then have kept everything original,i of course could be missing the point of doing this project.

As I said in the post, I have severe hearing loss in one ear so I need individual volume controls. The Black Widow Headphones have left/right volume controls, the WS5's do not. The Black Widow Headphones block 29 decibels of ambient noise, the WS5's block 23 decibels. I have used the Black Widow headphones for years and love the sound quality. I didn't want to take a chance on the WS5's being of the same quality. Replacement Black Widow Headphones cost $135, the WS5's cost $429. With the Black Widow setup, I can switch to ear buds or light weight headphones when the weather gets hot by using the removable headset and the adapter. With the WS5's, I'm stuck with them hot or cold. I like the flexibility of the removable headset control. So, why did I modify them? Two reasons, (1) I don't like the cord getting in the way when hunting in the woods, (2) because I could.

Andy,

The Deus is everything you said it would be. I have found around 75-80 relics thus far, and I've really not hunted that much. The weeds are high, and the hunting is hard, but the Deus still pulls the deep stuff out. I haven't used any of the stock programs yet. I'm using your relic program out of the book; I modify it as the need arises. After getting the concept down of how the Deus works, making modifications are easy. I have pulled many Spencer casings out of a very trashy area that is littered with iron and pull tabs. I adjust the Reactivity, etc. as needed. I hope the next update allows the stock programs to be overwritten; I don't see much of a need for them at this point.

To anyone else who reads this, if you haven't purchased Andy's book on the XP Deus, you're really missing out. Don't reinvent the wheel and try to learn everything from scratch; get the book and study it. I can't wait until the CTX 3030 book comes out; I'm sure I can learn a lot from it too.

Thanks Andy for all your dedication and support.

Agreed! Andy's book is a great resource for the new and experienced user. The Deus is the first non-White's detector I have owned and the task of "learning" the Deus was expedited with Andy's book. I too have decided to hit every "hunted out" site in my area and the finds are amazing, and in some cases, like a giant Silver Spoon, shocking. And by shocking, I mean, How could this have been missed by the other hunters? I recently purchased Vance's Muff for the Deus. The sounds are sharp, crisp, and are very close to the original Deus tones. I've been using them on sites I thought I hunted out, and am still pulling coins and relics.
Looks like you have some good hunting ahead at your hunted out sites as well. Congrats on the Bullets, casings, and coins.
