Black Widow Headphones wired with Garrett Connector Problems

I bought a set of used Black Widow headphones that are wired with the stock ATPro/Gold connector. It has individual volume control and two 2-position switches. Regardless of switch position I get a barely audible tone with volume control at 100%. They're in good shape but useless as they are.
All solder points are solid.
Any multimeter checks I can do to check the switches? What about bypassing or eliminating them? I'm not familiar with hp wiring but can follow directions and solder.

Your problem more than likely is the BW impedanceis 150 ohms:

Black Widow headphones were designed to accommodate the professional detectorist with special hearing requirements and for environments with high ambient noise levels. ......... The Black Widow contains a dual mini-toggle switching system like our famous Gray Ghost Ultimate. One switch provides greater compatibility with detector audio systems and the other switch allows signal limitation when extreme volume is not required. ,,,,,,

Speakers designed for maximum volume, sensitivity, efficiency, durability, and signal quality.
Special ultra sound-blocking extended muff design eliminating environmental ambient noise up to 29 decibels.
Impedance: 150 ohms nominal.[/color]

The ATPro headphones are 8 ohm.
AT Pro, AT Gold, Sea Hunter, Infinium (2202400)
• Built, field tested and approved for land use with AT Pro, AT Gold, Sea Hunter and Infinium detectors.
• Efficient, wide dynamic audio range speakers enhance weak signals - FIND MORE TREASURE!
• Dual volume controls for adjusting signal levels to suit individual hearing requirements.
• Comfortable leather headband and ear cushions for maximum comfort.
• Reinforced 10-foot coiled cord
• Speaker impedance: 8 ohms per channel. Mono/Stereo.
• Frequency response: 30-18,000 Hz.

One note about the waterproof connector on the headphones: If they are assembled as Garrett does they will be almost impossible to disassemble, repair and reassemble. I have NASA Micro-Miniature electronics training and I had a difficult time on the first one I repaired. The second one was sent back to Garrett for repair. And to my surprise they did not repair the headphones, they replaced them.

You might contact gary@detectorpro.com and verify the BW's compatibility with the ATPro (ATseries and Infinium detectors).

I'd say Gary did these, no splices that I can see and the cord is larger/beefier than my stock Garrett HPs. I sent him an email and his response was up to $50 to repair plus my shipping. I thought if it was one of the switches I could make the repair myself but since I have no clue how to check the switches I'll probably end up sending them off to him. Thank you for the reply.

Thanks Water Walker for the impedance tip. I plugged them into my ATX and they work great. I just assumed that any HP's with the Garrett adapter would work with any product with the same plug, wrong!

I use the Black Widows on my AT Pro with the Garrett connector and they are LOUD!! sometimes have to flip the limiter switch so it doesn't hurt my ears

I've taken resistance measurements on both my ATPro land phones and my amphibians at various volume settings.
Both sets deliver very loud volume on the ATPro and I have some hearing loss

Here are the various resistance measurements if it will help anyone.

Garret AT Land Phones
=======================================
Range - 7.4 ohms (Max volume)
to 256 ohms (Min Volume)
(Mono 2 pin connector, 2 volume controls)
The Left & Right volume controls interact

Left - Right - Resistance
Min - Min - 257 ohms
Max - Min - 13.5 ohms
Min - Max - 11.3 ohms
Max - Max - 7.4 ohms

Detector Pro AT Amphibians
=======================================
(Mono 2 pin connector, single volume control)
Volume = off, R = 2.13k min Vol
Volume = 2.0, R = 2.2k
Volume = 5.5, R = 2.6k "My Typical listening level"
Volume = 8.0, R = 3.4k
Volume = 10.0, R = 3.6k max Vol
