black sand

Hi guys I,m looking at buying a second hand LS and asked the guy why he was selling it his reply was
"It handles black sands well but found it does not have alot of detection depth with the small coil. Can be temperamental under certain areas and atmospheric conditions".(he is hunting gold over here in Aust) can any one help a newbie?is this the norm? this will be my first PI machine and plan to use it mainly on the beach

As a first PI for mainly beach work in the hands of a newbie, that is going to be a big, big challenge.
It's a little sensitive to outside electrical interferences, all popular beaches in here in Aust. is within high interference areas
Read a number of the posts here on the pages and you will find some that say the Infinium LS is mainly made for prospecting, which is fare away from said interferences.

Yes ....make sure you understand what you are buying.....even though this is my first detector and i have had it a few months now it is not a "turn on and go detector" in my opinion.
I would suggest you get some tips before you take the plunge. You may be better off with a gti 2500 garrett or maybe start with an ACE 250.
The pulse machine is great but expect a learning curve.I use mine for GOLD HUNTING which is very different from what you are doing.Talk to some INFINIUM users that use it on the beach and preferably people who know what they are talking about.

If you have Black Sand beach's................ A PI will be your weapon of defense.......... .................As the good VLF Detectors don't like Black Sand to well ............. Get your self a good scoop and plan on digging deep.

You can do very well on black sand with a Fisher CZ 20. I'm talking about pure black sand, iron laden ground up lava sand. I have used one for years and love it.

My CZ6A makes a nice little west coast rainproof prospector too in autotune mode where the high frequency machine get caniptions in this heavy mineralization we have here.
Just bought an Infinium and can't wait for the little brown truck to come a knockin'! :hot:
It is the perfect machine for prospecting and beach here. Now I have to buy some matching green rain gear!

In my beaches I hardly get any interference from powerlines and suburbs etc, but the salt water will give you a lot of interference (unless you are't tall and don't go in that deep, in that case salt water won't trouble you much) so you have to compramise its performance.
On wet sand its the best, on dry sand I think the vlf's perform better.

Because you have to compramise it's performance underwater, I'm not sure which detector is the best but it it seems like to me that my infinium still gets good depth. You can use the reverse discrim effectively to not have to dig bottletops and other bits of iron deep, which is great.
