this morning i tried out my new vaquero on a local beach everything was working out fine, until i got near the wet black sand.then i had false targets everywhere.i tried to gb them out ,knocked the sensitivity down to one, took the threshold out of super tune and finally went back to all metal nothing worked. i wasn't activilly searching in wet sand ,however the in coming tide and awave changed all that.if i'd been using my ace 250 i would have downed the sense and carried on.the vaquero might be a great all round machine, but it don't like the beach and i spend a lot of on the beachs here . maybe some one knows something i've missed . i'm feelng we may have wasted our money and i had such high hopes for it blowfly kilkis [keep it low, keep it slow]:detecting:

Hi

Try to GB your detector to a nail. (turning the GB knob until the nail ceases responding). Now go to the wet part of the beach. If it doesn't work, try it indeed with a smaller coil (the 5.75" would be perfect).

thanks saltydog and nick hunter ,i run with the standard coil that came with the detector. i tried what you suggested with the nail, either the nail was too big or something,it didn't work for me .i think that when you buy these machines they should give you the choice of what coil you want.one size does not fit all.the 5.75 coil would have been better for me to start out with.not living in america, the coil in australia costs $250.00 roughly 300 your money,so it's going to be awhile before i buy one. blowfly

Blowfly any single frequency detector will have a bad enough time dealing with wet salt sand, let alone black sand too !!!

# You were in the worst possible situation when you hit that zone mate...

In the old days we used to ground tune our detectors to a zone of the beach, and then work parallel to the water.
This allows detecting to be done in a constant zone.

* It seems you were detecting ok until that  wave arrived...

Check between your coil cover, and the coil for fine black sand too; ~ as this can drive a detector nuts if it's there,
when the black sand is dry under the coil cover it will shift about under the coil cover as you swing.
When on the beach, I don't use a coil cover personally.

All detector manufacturers issue detectors with a "standard ~ all round best performing coil."
A wide scan coil might be worth trying __ if you want to spend more time detecting in that zone of the beach.

I'll PM you...:):ausflag:
