Black box White's 4900 d/ Pro Plus coil question

Phlipper

I just bought a black box White's 4900 d/ Pro Plus metal detector. It has the pushbutton retune on the hand grip and the double stacked GEB pots. The detector came without any coil.

I always thought the 4900 was the only one of the black box pro series to use the old style 6B coils. I put an old 8 inch 6B coil on and the machine air tests pretty radically in GEB Max. However, when I put it into GEB discriminate, the detector nulls out over good targets (like quarters !!!)...even with the discriminate dial turned all the way down.

So I put on a 950 coil from a Sierra Madre and it seems to work perfectly, even in discriminate mode...

I have seen a few of these sold over the years and they always seem to have the old style, solid 6B coils attached.

What's going on??? Is this machine a freak??? Is it possibly malfunctioning with the 6B ??? Or did they come originally with the 950 ???

The attached files are White's detector and coil compatibility info I picked up on the forums a while back. I think the originator of this information was a forum member named Andrea.

Hope this helps

Thanks for that, Bob. What throws me is that the chart says the 4900 d/ Pro Plus uses the old 6B coils, while the 4900 DL Pro uses the newer 950 coils.

My machine is definitely marked 4900 d/ Pro Plus...but it must be a 4900 DL ???

Very confusing.

Wish I could help with the identification / mystery but I have no experience with those older machines.

Good luck
Bob

Thanks, Bob. White's wasn't real creative with their naming back in the day. Sometimes it can be really confusing.
