Biloxi Gulfport Beaches

I was wondering if anyone on this forum has any experience with the beaches in South Mississippi. I was driving down Highway 90 over the past weekend and the crowds around the Biloxi area beaches seem to be improving from last year. The BP oil spill kept most people away from the beaches so it was good to see the crowds returning. The beach area around the Biloxi lighthouse looked to have a very good crowd. Has anyone here detected in this area? I just picked up a new Excalibur 2 a few months ago and I was wondering if it be worth my trouble to try the beaches in South Mississippi since they're so close to my home in Pascagoula. The beach area of South Mississippi is about 30 miles of continuous man-made beach. I was just wondering if anyone here has done any water detecting in this area.

Those beaches would be good but I still would be wary of going into the water in the Gulf and anywhere near the beaches as the off gassing is still going on.

I would be wary of going near the beaches at all. Not worth the possible health issues.

The Gulf Coast off of Mississippi and Alabama and parts of Florida are off limits to me.

Actually, there is hardly any sign of the oil spill on any of the South Mississippi beaches. Back in January, I detected on the small beach area here in Pascagoula. It was low tide with a stiff north wind, so I was able to walk a considerable distance from the normal low tide mark. I dug several holes in excess of 1 foot just to see if I could find any oil residue. I did not find any oil at all. The barrier islands took the greatest hit from the oil spill. But the water and beaches of South Mississippi appear to be for the most part free of oil.

That is GREAT news! Thank's for the head's up - Terry
