Bill Ladd with the AT Gold in iron

I believe Bill Ladd has me "sold" on the AT Gold. I have been looking around at purchasing another detector and this one surely caught my eye. Not only is it a super relic / coin hunter in iron (I love the iron audio) this machine is waterproof to 10 feet! Having said that, I have been studying maps of my area and found 5 old swimming holes and I feel this will be the machine to fill the void. How many of you with the AT Gold run with iron audio on when hunting in areas like this? I am sure after a while one would become "batty" listening to all that iron audio lol However I love the feature as it tells a wonderful story and can pinpoint locations of activity. Once located, then one can slow down and work the area. In all honesty, this machine was at the bottom of my list for my next purchase but after viewing posts here on findmall and the Garrett website, this machine is now up in the # 1 position. Garrett has really has "out done" themselves with this machine. Please feel free to add your own success story with the AT Gold. Thanks - Jim

Thanks Jim for sharing the video with Bill Ladd, Must say seeing Bill in action again brought a smile ear to ear and I'm still grinning ;)

I've been telling friends the AT-Gold is one neat machine, a must have detector for many purposes. The AT Pro caught my eye when it first came out but for me the Gold appears to have an edge for my type of hunting. Have owned both but the AT Gold really is impressive, both land and fresh water.

Plus, Some mineralized ground here in the West Coast will drop the lower conductive signal into the high iron range, because we can adjust back the iron discrimination now the targets that fall in iron range sound like a conductive signal alerting the user of a good Target.

I use this feature out in fresh water or some of the Coastal range areas were mineralized dirt drops the signal. Great for park hunting as well, a recent park hunt bagged a V-nickel and two buffalos and a sliver.

Bill Ladd let me borrow his relic detector for several weeks years ago, had a blast and knowing it was Bill's made it even better.

Thanks again for sharing the video, We all miss Bill and we all love Bill like a brother looking forward to seeing him again.

Hi Paul,
I appreciate your post. I have never met Bill but have watched many of his videos. He just seems like such a nice laid-back / down-to-earth individual that displays his passion for everything he finds. I bet he is a lot of fun to hang out with. You are most certainly welcome for the video. That is very interesting about your mineralized ground dropping low conductors. So there is a "silver lining" with this iron audio thing. I found the iron audio very intriguing and really opened up my eyes when Bill started pulling some neat relics and a "Largie." The way he was talking in the video, it sounds like this colonial cellar hole was "spanked" pretty hard with many detectors and left for dead....at least until the AT Gold came along.- Jim

I had watched that video of Bill's a while ago and also was impressed.

I tend to run my ATG in disc 1 with the iron audio off and then check iffy targets by kicking in the iron audio. It is interesting how this feature works on screw caps giving iron tone on the edges that is left and right of target center and higher tone in the middle but diagnostic enough to tell. The smaller 8" coil is also key to the target separation in trash iron with the ATG. I have the larger coil and in heavy iron you want to put the small coil back on.

From time to time I have run with iron audio on and in heavy iron it almost acts like a threshold and you do as Bill in the video and listen for mid or high tones. Still this set up can get tiring after a while so I switch back and forth.

Paul I was interested in your comments on the mineralized ground dropping the low conductors down into the iron range. I'm over the hill in Nevada but hunt California as well. How low do the the low conductors drop? I've been using disc levels of 39-40 in disc 1 when water hunting and finding gold which generally comes in at the low 40's. Ground mineralization on GB runs in the mid 80's around here.

I have a lot of machines and the ATG is a great addition and a go to fresh water machine. And great machine for any application -- light weight great target separation and waterproof -- does it get any better than that.

I have watched a lot of Bill's video's and seen him hunt that same area with other unit's....

I have 2 AT Pro's and a AT Gold....
I run my AT Pro's in Custom Pro mode,, nothing notched out,, with iron disc at 35 and iron audio On.
Sens at max or as high as I can...
I have run my AT Pro's this way for over a year,,I got use to the sounds...

Now my AT Gold,,,I run it in Disc 1, iron disc at 35 and iron audio On.
Threshold at 2 and sens at max or as high as I can

AT Pro number 1 has the 8.5" x 8" dd coil.
AT Pro number 2 has the 5" x 8" dd coil.
AT Gold has the little super sniper 4.5" con. coil...

I have other units
Explorer SE Pro
Fisher F-75 LTD
Fisher CZ 3d
Fisher I D Edge
But I grab my AT's first,, to me they are a fun unit to use,
I like the 0 to 99 number's and the manual GB...
If I get to a place to trashy to GB, I can guess at a number and hunt...
One AT Pro and 4.5" coil is paid for it self with a nice 14 K ring..

Hello Atlas,

Here on the West Coast I've hunted dirt were low conductive signals ID as iron, A friend of mine from that area warned me to not bypass those iffy signals coming in as iron when I first started hunting there with the Explorer XS. Always hunted in Ferrous mode prefer to hear it all and sure enough what I was once seeing as a low conductor out in my area (Central California valley) was now reading as iron in the west coast hills, These were mission era sites lots of low conductive signals took a while to adjust.

One of the beauties of the AT Gold a user can adjust iron discrimination so those targets that dropped in the iron range now sound conductive, Depending on the site I've had to lower my iron disc to the lower twenties to upper twenties.

This applies for fresh water as well, Up in my area on the lakes and rivers mineralization drops the lower conductive target to iron range. Not too many users know this but try to hunt in all METAL MODE set your iron discrimination level a tad below normal settings when hunting in mineralztized soil or fresh water, All metal mode sees through the tough masked soil better gaining the user more depth over disc mode.

Off to work here in a few minutes, A pleasure seeing others like yourself hunt California. Enjoy your AT Gold it's one yet of a machine

Hi Jim,

I've never meet Bill either but met him through the internet, Always enjoyed his post and videos sort of an internet friend over the years still have the cool stuff he gave me several years ago those I will always take care off.

Looking forward to seeing more of Bill on future videos, Somehow he always manages to bring us a smile.

Thanks Jim,
Paul (Ca)

Hi El,

Looking forward to us getting together for a day hunt, Found a spot near your area with strong possibilities getting some old finds. Allot of trash but it had never been hit until my last time in there, good place for the AT Gold plus the site is in that area with that goofy mineralized dirt knocking low conductive into iron range.

Safe site to hunt, no hopping fences good place to hunt with no pressure. Here's a quick pic of my finds from this particular Site minus the phoenix buttons, mission era up to 19th century.

See you soon El,
Paul (Ca)

That is a pretty good video. Given that the AT Gold runs at 18khz it probably is pretty equal to the Technetic G2 (19khz) with the edge probably going to the Gold since it is waterproof. I have also found many good targets in iron with the G2 but have had to quit due to heavy downpours. Maybe I should give the Gold a try. Enjoyed the video. John

Nice finds! What are the items on the bottom? Hard to see if they are coins / buttons / tokens? Thanks - Jim

Nice finds John!

Below are my finds found recently.....[/quote]

Thanks Jim,

The top upper right is a top portion to a powder flask or something that protains to a top portion of a gun powder container, my memory is slowly fading away have found many of these before they date before and a little after 1850's.

The bottom three are Phionex buttons, these were used as trade currency here on the West Coast with the Indians and if memory serves me right around 1820 era. West Coast relic hunters would love to find these, rare finds for sure phionex buttons are usually found at old mission era sites or early 1820-30 settlements.

Have some litature on Phionex buttons somewhere, Need to read up on them again my memory on artifacts and such is not what it used to be.

I'll post a couple of close-up pics on the phionex buttons in a day or do, they range in different sizes.

Thanks again,
Paul (Ca)

Beautiful buttons. I did a quick google search and I believe I identified one of your buttons. Wow sounds like you have yourself a nice hunting spot. Best of luck in the field. - Jim

cool vid. cant the at pro with 5 x 8" coil in pro mode/iron audio do the same. or is the gold faster?
My thoughts too. I'm aware of the differences between the gold and pro. I use the Pro and have pulled nice coins in close proximity to iron (not mixed in the hole) with the larger DD and coins that were actually with small iron using the 8"x5" DD. I'd expect if Bill was sent the Pro to test the results would have been the same. Great video.
Comments via experience anyone?

I know it has been discussed before but I still don't understand the reason behind notching out all the iron like he did in the video and then running the iron audio on all the time. Why not just not notch anything and hunt that way??? Maybe I am missing something as I am fairly new to the hobby and new to my AT Pro. But I notch out all iron and run no iron audio. If I get an "iffy" signal I turn the iron audio on and listen for the grunts on the edges of the signal. That is my understanding of how to utilize the iron audio.
