Bigfoot Coil Problem?

Tioga

New member
I got the Bigfoot coil for my DFX earlier this week and tried it out for the first time yesterday. Right off the bat, it wouldn't air balance if the Pre Amp was set above 2. Ground balancing worked ok, so I tried letting the air balance default with Pre Amp at 3 and AC at 75 (settings I run on my stock coil) and experienced a lot of falsing. I was in the woods with no power lines near.

Everything I've read about the Bigfoot says you can easily run the Pre Amp at 4 without any falsing, even around electrical interference.

I also found that sometimes when pinpointing, the tone would hang up and continue to sound even when I held the coil in the air.

I put the stock coil back on and had none of these issues occur.

Any Bigfoot users out there ever have these problems? Did I possibly get a bad coil?

Thanks for any advice.

I know the XLT has absolute value facet which has to be put on. Would imagine the DFX has the same thing or something similiar for proper performance..Do you have the one for the DFX or the XLT 6.59 freq. which many Whites have...Last but not least its been 10 years or so since I used one and ground balancing was different as I believe you put the heel on the ground and let the toe up after you air groundbalanced and then balanced on ground..I would contact Jimmy Sierra products as they make them and you could of get it from the horses mouth so to speak in proper ground balancing..And remember the DFX may differ from the XLT version that I used...If you bought used or new after contacting Sierra prtoducts and it doesn't work contact the seller..as If a whites coil goes out of tune it won't ground balance.....

I have the DFX and Bigfoot. I have never had the problem you have.
When I ground Balance I just put the tip to the ground, not the whole coil. Hope this helps!

Thanks, Dan. The DFX doesn't have absolute value, and I ground balanced with the front tip to the ground at a 45 degree angle.

I suspect it is defective. Just wanted to hear from some of you who have used one.

I appreciate the feedback.

I GB'd according to directions, with tip to the ground at a 45 degree angle. I'm pretty sure it's defective, but wanted to see if anyone else has had the same issues.

Thanks for the feedback!:)

I have a bigfoot on my MXT. It ground balances easily and operates much quieter than the stock coil. Have cranked the gain up to max on a number of occasions with no falsing.

Sounds like you may have a bad coil. Good luck getting repairs. If you are a jewelry hunter you are going to really like the bigfoot when you get it functioning properly.

Judging by reading the line of posts its a defective coil so get your money back or a replacement...Good luck as a Bigfoot coil is a good acc. coil when working properly...
