Big Silvers at the Old Park

Haven't been out in a few weeks, so I was itching to go detecting. Did some online research and found an older area of a park here in Pittsburgh that looked promising. Got to the park and decided to hit an old grove for a few minutes while I waited on my buddy to show up. I walked around for 5 minutes or so and noticed some not so old plugs nearby. Someone had been here recently, but since this is where we decided to meet. I continued hunting for a few minutes. As he is pulling up, I get a nice 12-47 signal at 6". As he walks up, I drop my Lesche down on the spot so we can chat for a minute. I proceed to get down and dig the signal. Out pops a '28S Walking Liberty Half! My 3rd half ever and all within the last month from this park. We continued to hunt around that spot for another 45 min or so with only 1 wheatie to show for it.

We decide to head over to the spot that I found on the old aerial photos. When we pull up to the spot, my buddy gets out laughing. I ask what is so funny, and he tells me that our other buddies hit this spot a few days ago and pulled seated, barbers, large cents, etc... out of there! Darn!!!

So we decide to hit an adjacent field. After about 30 min or so I get a decent signal, kinda choppy and would only hit both ways occasionally. When I tried to pinpoint, it kept pulling me off to the side, but the signal was too good to let go. So after using the wiggle back method, I dug down about 7" and out popped a '58D Franklin Half! Two halves in one hunt!!

We were joined by a couple more friends (one pulled 2 barber dimes out of the spot that I found on my research). Close to dark, we walked up the hill and dug a few Wheaties and my friend digs a Washington and a Rosie in the same hole. A few minutes later, I get a 1-37 signal at 7" and I pull a '42 Washington.

A 3 silver night after a 3 week layoff was a welcome surprise!!

Nice finds! I was at that same park yesterday and got 4 silvers myself, big congrads on the double half day! Gl&hh

Thanks Mole!!!

Congrats! But if those buddies of yours hit that area and were not using CTX's, you need to go back and hit it for sure. I bet you anything they missed something that the CTX can sniff out.

Unfortunately, everyone that I know of around Pittsburgh has the CTX!!

I'd still hit it just in case, sounds like good ground.

Which coil do you use the most, stock, 6 or 17? From what I have read the 6 is good for trashy areas and the 17 is better for fields and beaches. Which coil do you think gets the best deph? Thanks..

All I use is the 17" coil. I hunt 99% parks. Even in trashy areas, if you go slow, it will do just fine and it is a little deeper than the stock coil.

Whoa! Big ones!

Nice finds. A lot of people would prefer to find a Walker over a Franklin, but the Franklin half dollar is a far less common find. I've found a lot of Walker's over the years, but only a 2 Franklins. Way to go to find both the same day.
