Hello everyone, The last couple of weeks the city that I live in has been renovating a few of the older parks in the area. As always with such a busy schedule and the holidays this site totally slipped my mind.... until one day last week I just happen to be driving by the neighborhood park and noticed several large mounds of dirt lying next to the parks shelter and the children's swing set area. Then, did I realize this was one of the parks I read about in the local paper a while back. The reason for the many piles of dirt is because the city is installing new side walks through out the park. After seeing this site I was afraid that this new hot spot would now not be so hot. The construction site looked like it had been worked over for awhile because alot of the new sidewalks had already been laid so I was afraid other fellow hunters had beat me to this new and promising site. Got up Saturday morning and was out at the site just as the sun was coming up. I would say there is at least 8-10 large piles of dirt that had been dug and each one is 6-8 ft. deep. After scanning each one the only thing I came up with was a few clad and a few scraps of aluminum and a few of the beaver tail type pull tabs. At this point I was a little disappointed but I wasn't going to give up so easy. On my second round the very first mound of dirt I get a descent signal at the very top corner of the pile. I dig down about 2-3 inches and see nothing. Scan the hole again and the signal is still there. The whole time I'm thinking its some kind of junk target.......I dig down about another 2 inches and swipe the dirt away..... suddenly a large silver rim pops out of the dirt. Little did I realize I had just unearthed my very first 1917 walking liberty half dollar and in pretty good shape I might add. With high hopes I went back out on Sunday morning hoping to find more goodies but got skunked. I believe most of the goodies are in the first foot of dirt starting from the bottom of these piles and rest assure I will be keeping an eye on this site........that's of course if it doesn't slip my mind once again! Thanks for sharing my story.......J.b.
