Big Silver and ...wait for it...Indians!!!!

SquatMonkey and I got out to an old house today in between the rain and got in about four and a half hours. My third target was a 12-44 signal at two inches which turned out to be a Walking Liberty Half of the 1943 Vintage. About thirty minutes later I got my Holy Grail not once but twice. Dlrwaitnonadime has been on a quest for over two years now to find an Indian Head penny and today it happened. We watch posts on here all the time and I always think I am never gonna find stuff like I see on here and within the last two weeks we have found a Barber Quarter and now a Walking Liberty and Indians at last. To say I was happy is an understatement. The Indians both came in at 07-35, 11-35 on my machine. One of them was in the same hole with a wheat. I dug the wheat, filled the hole. Stood up swung the coil and bam another 07-35. Reopened the hole and my pinpointer dinged again and out came my second Indian. Anybody got any tips for cleaning up Indians? These both had a dark black layer over the sweet green patina. I was able to get most of it off one of them with a soft toothbrush but the other is quite stubborn. The dates are 1905 and 1907. I got to cross off the Walker and Indians today. I guess seated is my next goal.

Go to a beauty supply store and get a container of Hydrogen Peroxide, or ask a local beauty salon (use your best sweet talkin') for a small amount like a cup full, it's cheap and you don't need much. Put a small amount in a dish or plastic container and put it in the microwave for 15 seconds. Take the now warm Peroxide and drop the penny in it. It will bubble and the crud will start coming off. Once it stops you can repeat the process, just remember NOT to put the coin in the microwave. This works pretty well for the kind of stuff that is on coins like yours. But remember that the crud that is being removed may actually be some of the coin and you can wind up with less detail. Electrolysis will work also but it can really eat the coin away and it removes the patina that gives the coin that character an old coin has. I personally don't like the results of electrolysis unless you like shiny looking slugs. Practice with a few semi old dirty pennies and you will get an idea of how much to clean. Good luck, nice finds!

Great day !!!!!

Great Job! I will never forget the day I found I found my first walker or IH because they both happened on the same day, about 20ft underwater in northern Minnesota. Congrats on those finds! I hope your seated shows itself in your next post very soon. Your hot on the heels of it by the looks of it, that's for sure. I can't wait to see it. HH and thanks for sharing -Marc

Real nice finds !
The Walking Liberty Half is one of the best ( or the best ) looking coin ever produced - congrats !

Thanks for the information. I tried this and it worked really well. Our Wheats come out of the ground very crusted, most of the time we can not even get a date on them. I got all the ones we have found for the year so far out and gave em all a couple of warm peroxide baths a brushed them with a soft toothbrush. The majority of them are now in much better shape. Can read the dates and mint marks on most of them now. I am gonna do all of them I have found in the next couple of days.

Awesome finds, love the half. I usually clean mine with a medium tooth brush using light preasure and baking soda. I didn't have the large amount of petina as yours but did have a ton of crud. This method does a great job and doesn't remove all the petina. It also requires a little longer clean time and elbow grease

Congrats on finds,

Moose
