BIG pennies!

What's the deal with these big pennies?---We found three of them that are slightly larger in diameter than the "normal" ones.----I looked in my Yeomans Red Book but didn't see anything stated about them.----The three large ones we found are 1982, 1989 Phillys (P) & a 1992-D.-----They aren't beat up, flattened out or anything--just larger diameter.------Got the wife & I curious!

We thought we were seeing things at first! :)-----I wish I could post pictures of them alongside other Lincolns but I'm unable to.-----I just checked & they are almost identical in diameter size to a nickel (maybe just a "hair" less), but REAL close.---Funny thing to--they are not from the same year--as I said they are 1982P, 1989P & 1992D.------First ones I've seen--there's gotta be a logical explanation somewhere.--------Del

Del,

Without seeing them....Im going to take a guess. I would say that are some kind of "knock off" type coin minted by a private mint...... or .....could be something made by a novelty company or magicians supply type company. I will try to call someone tomorrow that I know that has been the coin business for 35 years+ and see what he says.

We need to see your stuff......come on its time!

But of course Michael, you got it!!------Inflation---now why didn't I think of that?? :lmfao:

If your saying 3 different date & type coins at 3 different places? Thats amazing! I know of nothing that would fall into that category.

I'm saying that they are all three memorial pennies---are different dates (as stated) and each one was found in a different area (different hunt sites) and at different times (on different hunts).-----The only thing amazing about them is their size.---They're big 'uns!------A coin dealer could no doubt easily explain it (them).-----I'll probably take them down to the coin shop tomorrow to solve this "mystery". :)

I dont think the coins are minted by US mint. Its Amazing that you found those in several locations.....weird!

Come on! You GOTTA own a camera or have a friend that would loan you one........

My wife & I took those three coins to the coin shop today to have them checked.-----The owner said although they are identical in design to the zinc memorial cent, he has never seen anything like them (because of their size) but is sure they weren't minted by the U.S. mint.----He has been in business 60 years & knows his coins.----I know I can't recall ever seeing any like them in any other Lincolns & I am 74 years old, just these three newer date ones.------They weigh: 1982P 2.4 grams--the 89P & '92 D 2.5 grams.---These are 22 mm, "normal" zincs are 19 mm.-----So it looks like you hit the nail on the head James----they evidently (in all probability) aren't struck by the U.S. mint.-------Elton, my ole friend----you'd think guys our age would have "seen it all" by now!-----NOT! ;)----------Del

Well Del you and Patsy are the proud owners of three Large Cents. Did you find them with a regular or Large coil? I have found fatties but not biggies. Congratulations on your finds and keep us posted. HH :minelab:

:)Nah Hershey my friend, I have enough trouble finding skinny Indians let alone fatties!-----Think I'll frame these alongside that counterfeit '14-D Lincoln I found some years back!-----I found that one in an old park & about 4 or 5" deep.---I thought it looked a little odd but still thought I really had something there!----Took it in to a friend of mine back in NE that owns a coin shop.---He took one look at it & said "Del, I hate to burst your bubble but that's a counterfeit 14-D you got there"---plumb wrecked my day! ;)

Del,

Whatever you got is unique ....thats for sure.....maybe you can find them on the net someplace.

As for the 1914-D penny.....a lot of strange things have happened at the mints....especially back in the day. Some coins had to have been made and smuggled out....that just had too. Some errors where just too crazy to be any other way.....and/or they just couldnt keep up on quality control. Now, computers do it all.....errors exist....but not like they use to be. I would try find out more and if the 14-d MIGHT have been made by the mint or.....in someones basement. You may never know....but it would be interesting to find out.

How about I just send you a digital camera so we can see all your goodies?

I just thought you weren't taking your meds Del......

So keep looking. Since they were found at different places "They just may be US Coin Minted DEL". Were they even close to being found in the same area?? If so maybe some event took place
that gave them out nearby...............Be interesting to find out...

Will a Magnet stick to them DEL ?.

I just checked them with a magnet Elton & no, they don't stick to it.----We thought about the event thing to but they were found in different areas (all three of them).-----Well, I'll end this---I'm sure everyone is getting sick of hearing my two cents worth----uhh, I mean 3 cents worth! :)
