BIG, OLD silver.....RIGHT on the surface!!!!

I got permission for a field last weekend, and it was worked up, and smoothed off. And we got a ton of rain over the weekend, and with temps in the 30's it was not drying out a bit!

I got off work at 3pm, got to the field by 3:40pm....so I had a lil over an hour to hunt before dark, was dying to get out. Every 5 ft I walked I had to kick mud off my boots, it was squishy, and a mess. I had what I call "frankenstein feet"....lol

Not much for the first 30 min....then I saw something about 15 ft away, and the sun was just shining off of it back at me....I walked closer and I could see right away it was big silver. Talk about making your heart race!!!!! The first pic you see here is exactly like I found it, reverse side was facing me and I could see without even touching it, that it was a barber half!

SWEET!!!! This is the first silver half I have found in a field in 5 yrs of field hunting. And it is my oldest silver half this year. It was a 1900-S....it had some battle scars from the yrs of plowing, but I sure am NOT complaining. Didn't even have to dig for it.

I also got a V nickel and a Boyscout pin...ran out of time, hope to get back tomorrow for another hour.

Congratulations on the finds, finding a Barber half in a muddy field would make my day to good eye:thumbup:

Did you run your coil over it to make it "official" That's an awesome find for such a short hunt with those harsh conditions. I know what you mean about out having to get out. These short days are killing me. Congrats on your finds!

Congratulations on a good find Terry! Thanks for the pictures my friend!

Super cool story and find!
congratulations and I hope you find some more out there soon

Congrats on a Killer find Terry ! :clapping:

I've found a few old coins on the surface over the last few years - a 1848 Nova Scotia half penny that was sitting between two rocks on a beach in Maine.
The other was a 1878 Indian Cent that was on slope - just under the leaves where an old church once stood - maybe years of rain water running down the slope exposed this coin ?
From what I've seem - older surface coins are a rare find - but they do seem to show up now and then.

Nice find! Still waiting on my first Barber half. I have eye spyed several silver dimes in teh past year, but never a half!

Way to go. I hope the field keeps on producing.
