Big Griz killed

The downloaded pictures are
of a man who works for the US Forest Service
in Alaska and his trophy bear (killed in self
defense).

He was out deer hunting last week when a
large grizzly bear charged him from about 50
yards away. The guy emptied his 7mm Magnum
semi-automatic rifle into the bear and it
dropped a few feet from him. The big bear
was still alive so he reloaded and shot it
several times in the head.

The bear was just over one thousand ! six
hundred pounds. It stood 12' 6" high at the
shoulder, 14' to the top of his head. It's
the largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the
world.
Of course, the Alaska Fish and Wildlife
Commission d! id not l et him keep it as a
trophy, but the bear will be stuffed and
mounted, and placed on display at the
Anchorage airport to remind tourists of the
risks involved when in the wild.

Alaska should be a lot safer now....... unless
his dad finds out what happened to his boy:lol:

Well, that's just why I never go into remote bear country unless I'm well heeled! Wow--can't imagine tangling with one that big. At fourteen feet top to toe that bruin would gobble up the ground in a huge hurry in a rushing charge. That guy had to have nerves of steel. And the bear at that weight, it would be like trying to slow down a screamin' train.

I get more than nervous when they're around a thousand pounds. That's one huge, dead bear--the picture of that paw says it all.

Hi,

This one has been circulating since 2001. The Anchorage Daily News had a write-up on it a couple years back on what really happened. In some variations there are human remains found in the bears stomach!

The bear did not charge, was not a world record, or even a record for Alaska. Here are the details from http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl-grizzlybear5.htm

"This email tale, circulating constantly in one form or another since November 2001, seems to grow taller year by year. Ironically, the first two snapshots

I should have checked for hoaxes before posting :ranting:

Hi Gary,

Like all good hoaxes, the story is based largely in fact and really just exaggerated. Where it got out of control was the ones talking about human remains in the stomach and bodies found... which just leads to more bear paranoia.

I guess I am sensitive to this because as a lifelong Alaskan I've had a bit of experience with bears. And I get tons of questions from people who are obviously so worried about bears that it ruins their ability to experience Alaska. I met one tourist couple up near Wrangell-St. Elias National Parks a few years ago. They were at the entrance to a road leading off the highway into the main park. I chatted with them for some time, describing some of the wonders of the area. Came to find out they were too afraid to leave the main highway to enter the park because of concerns about bears! No matter how much I tried to convince them, they lamented how nice it would be to go into the park but when I left them it was clear they would not do it. Just too afraid.

And that, I think, is very sad.
