Big Foot coil???

Old Katz

New member
I went to Kelly Co to look at other coils. I see there is a
10x14DD coil for the MXT. I DID NOT see a coil I've heard about called
BigFoot. Is this 10x14 the same.

Two more questions:
1. When pinpointing with the 10x14 coil, where IS the target usuyally
to be found under the coil?

2. Same question for Bigfoot if this is a different coil?

Thanks

Not even close............ The Bigfoot is a Jimmy Sierra product, a 3"X18" DD loop, great for covering a large area at a depth of 4-5 inches. Very lightweight.

The 10X14 is a White's DD known more for it's depth and coverage and quite a bit heavier. Pinpointing is either right in the middle or off of the toe or heal on the 10X14 DD. The Bigfoot is best when pinpointing right in the middle at the arrows.

Another thing is that the two coils have a different purpose. The big foot would be used where coverage is needed but where depth is not the issue. The 10x14 would be used to get more depth. I've never used the 10x14 but think you should look into the 10x12 SEF. The SEF and 10x14 are bigger coils and in my opinion should be used in less trashy open areas. Just my humble opinion. Rob

Thank you.
I see whites has a big 12DD coil as well, but is expensive.
Thanks again on the pinpointing.

Katz, give us an example of how and what you are wanting to hunt that you would need a larger loop. We would be happy to make some reccomendations. At last count, there were 21 loops to choose from for the MXT. Many of us has some slightly used loops that just don't work in for us, but just might work for you.

What kind of ground to you have, are you hunting beaches, relics, jewelry, coins? Do you want depth, coverage or both?

The White's spyder 12" loop A.K.A. as the 300MM loop is a conical, not a DD.

Like Larry said, "Many of us has some slightly used loops that just don't work in for us, but just might work for you." I've got a few since I got new coils for my V3. Rob

Answer:
I have a couple locations that used to have old buildings from the 1890's. I've used both the MXT with a 6x9DD coil and have had NO success in finding anything other than rusted rail road spikes.
Theres GOT to be something there but my MXT and Ace250 isn't finding it. I found Nails post om the Garrett forum to be interesting because he indicated that on the Graphic display even though he never got audible tone at deeper levels, the Display on the Garrett 2500 still indicated there was something there. He claims depth from 15 20 to 30 inches, completely useless for parks and soccer fields but sounds like it would be a better detgector for hunting these corn and bean fiels where the old 1890's buildings used to be.

15, 20 and 30 inches is hard to believe. The only way one might find coins that deep is if dirt was carried in as frequently happens in land development these days, or if there has been heavy rain and flooding has occured. THEN I can see how one might find coins buried that deep.

I've noticed that with my MXT I can hear a sligh bump in the machines background hum when passing over a target but I can't get a read on how deep past 12 inches.
Rather than buy a new machine like the Garrett 2500 ( I can't afford it ) I think my best option is for bigger coils to go deeper in the fields. I'm not all that concerned with how much ground I'm going to cover. I think I need more depth. Of course it's possible the reason I have not found anything in those fields is that others have been there before.

I'm thinking whites 12inch coil would give me the added depth or the 10DD coil.

I think you are right Katz, the 12" is a conical and would work best in medium to lower mineralized ground and my favorite in mineralized ground is the 10 DD. I would think you could pick up a used Ex 10DD at a pretty good price right now. If your hunting spots are very trashy, you will have to go to the EX 6" DD or the White's 5.3.

Thanks for your reply Larry.
I have an Eclipse 6x10DD but I have not been very successful useing it in the area I mentioned
in the last post. It's posszible others have already searched this area, or there was never
anything there anyway. I will say this however, it's a killer in the parks and soccer fields.
Pinpointing with it is SOOOOooooooo easy. It will pick up deep targets but in the parks
and soccer fields the targets are usually junk. I also have the Whites 5.3 but I have not used
it much since I got the Eclipse DD.
