Does anyone know what machine is better at finding 14 k and 18 k gold rings and also how about gold coins 900 .. thanks Jerry

my personnel experience is excals no1 i"v got an BHID 950 it lacks in the depth department.

Nightman-- in an earlier post you talked about getting chest deep in the water and into the shallows and that was the type of water hunting you will do. Now you ask which is best for gold, etc.

If any salt water hunter using ANY water detector comes on here and post that they are getting more depth with one over the other in chest deep water I would ask them how can they tell how deep the find was? Did they have a depth meter inside their scoop??

I have used both the BHID and Excalibur. They are both good water detectors. Those that say they get no depth in saltwater with the BHID must be using it in Disco mode. In A/M using the Gobble-Gobble technique to max out the sensitivity in A/M you will have no trouble staying with those using the Excalibur. Sometime noisy in surf. I like the Excalibur in DISC mode. For my money, in Disc no other water detector can compare to it. Nice and quiet under all conditions.

However, there is more to consider.

I have used both in chest deep water and bad surf/wave conditions. In the stock configuration they both suck in those conditions. Both without a straight shafter are hard to handle. Straight shafts make all the difference in deep water.
The stock headphones on the Excalibur leave much to be desired. I have a Sov GT (which is basically the same detector) the GT tones with a good set of headphones are light years ahead of the Excalibur. The Ex is a tone detector. If you can't get clear and identifying tones why have it. The BHID has much better stock headphones. The only trouble is they have no volume control and are LOUD. Really loud, but you will have no trouble hearing signals over heavy surf. The lights on the BHID are accurate. However, you won't see them much when working the coil in waist deep water and breaking surf.
So be prepared to dishout extra dollars to convert stck to useable configurations. Why Whites/Minelab dont go straight shaft is beyond me.

Comparisons (shootouts) would be usless under water detecting conditions. Up in the wet/dry sand? If thats where you want to hunt get a Sov GT I guarantee it will make you happy --if you like tones. If you like Icons and graphs and all that visual stuff dont by a GT.

Thanks Don for taking time to answer very helpful . But I do have one more question what machine picks up on 14k and 18 k better. 10 k is not a problem with most machine because 10k is only 41 percent gold and the rest copper and silver or nickle. so I was just wondering if one is better then the other on 14k 18k 22k thanks Jerry
