BH 505 problems

Hey guys, I have a Bounty Hunter 505 and I just bought my son the Bounty Hunter 202. We decided to do some comparing and we put both detectors on the kitchen table and set the detectors to the "all metal" mode. We passed silver and clad coins in front of the coils. The 202 seemed to work fine but the 505 would not pick up on the coins unless they were within 2" of the coils and the readout said they were 10" deep. I replaced the batteries and had the same results. I took the detectors outside and put the coins on the ground and got the same reports as on the table. I checked the batteries and they read 9.23v and 9.3v. I swapped the coils from the 202 to the 505 and the problem stayed the same on the 505. Any information on fixing this problem would be great. Thanks

Were both detectors turned on at the same time? Detectors crosstalk with each other, and sometimes the symptom is not a bunch of erratic beeping, but suppression of sensitivity.

Other things to check: are the batteries alkalines (not "heavy duty" or regular zinc carbon)? Did you check to make sure the searchcoil is properly plugged into the connector?

Has the 505 delivered reasonable performance in the past?

I just got my Pioneer 505 back from BH last week. It was not under warranty, but BH put new battery clips on it, a new coil and a new faceplate and although they said there was nothing wrong with the battery charge indicator, once I got it back, the indicator did not act improperly as it had prior to me sending it in. Oh, BH even put in two non-alkaline batteries to boot and I was only charged $12.50, and that included return shipping.

My advice is to send it to BH ASAP so you can maximize its use as the weather gets warmer.

PS, last week I gave BH customer service a grade of a "B" but upon thinking about it, I would change that to an "A."

Hey Dave.
I am using New Duracell Alkaline batteries in both the 505 and the 202. I turned the 202 off and took the 505 metal detector out side there was not anything around to interfere with the sensitivity. It is plugged in correctly. I used the coil from the 202 also to double check if the coil was going bad and still the same results. I used the 505 in the fall it seemed to be working OK I found some clad coins about 6" in depth, I only used it for a few hours before I put it away for the winter.

Please tell 'em that the matter was already discussed on the Findmall forum, and that Dave Johnson says he's 98% sure it's a machine that developed a problem, not pilot error. Hopefully that'll save both you and the customer service person the hassle of having to go through the same issues over again.

Also when you send it in, I recommend including a printout of this thread, or a written summary of the important parts. It'll help to guide the repair tech in the right direction.

before you send it off try something for me,as i own a landstar and the 505 is one without GB..
turn your machine on put it in all metal mode.Try it like you did. then move the coin away and press the ground trac button. check it again.
if that doesn't work while still in all metal put the coin close to the coil where it starts getting louder then press the ground trac button.
the signal should get quieter, then pull the coin away and press the ground trac button again the all metal should reset to preset.
you may have to be outside while doing this as my LandStar will pick up my ceiling fan some times! 3 feet up..
you may have to go between all metal and Disc a couple of times and press the ground trac a few times...exact science?,no..but it works for me.

Sorry forgot to say,It sounds like its detuning....Detuning helps size and pinpoint an object..

Hey guys,
Thanks for all your input I sent it off this afternoon to have the bounty hunter service dept. take a look at it. I will re post after I find out what was wrong with it. I hope to get it back soon we are going out hunting in a couple of weeks, I might need to go buy a back up detector. Maybe its time to up grade,:detecting: any suggestions on a good deep penetrating gold finding detector.

I'm not sure yo will ever learn what was wrong with it. BH service told me that my battery charge indicator was working fine when I sent it in but I know it wasn't. When I got it back, it worked fine, so they must have fixed it but did not acknowledge that.

I'm still working with my first detector a BH505, and like mentioned had similar problems. Solution, disassemble and reassemble. Will never know why, it works now, or did not back then, but it is always one of the easiest things to do and usually gets you good results. That is of coarse after you have checked the above mentioned connections and obvious solutions.Glad to see your back in the hunt
