BH 202 question

stewartlittle

New member
I was at a Wal Mart yesterday and seen a 202,it was $198.00.Dont know if thats a good price or not.
I've been lookin for my 10 y.o. son a MD,the last time I went out I took him and he would'nt let me have any fun,he did'nt even want me to dig.

The one I seen said auto ground balance on the box.

Is it really auto GB or is it just a preset GB?

If it is auto, how good does it work?

How would it stand up against the Ace250?

hello stewart little, im the proud [and very productive] owner of the bh pioneer 202. it is automatic ground balance, no settings, no worries. ive had the 202 for 2 years now and have had no trouble at all out of it. i can say that the 202 has found stuff that minelabs, whites, and nautilus have missed. i have been detecting over 25 years and have tried them all my friend. i own 6 machines - 1 whites coinmaster 3, 1 nautilus lf, and 4 bounty hunters. i just prefer to use my 202 nowadays. its all the other machines wrapped up into one. i have never hesitated to put the 202 up against any machine out there - some of these guys are still scratching their heads. i know almost nothing about the ace 250; i generally stay away from garrett. i have made many picture posts on this site - you should check them out - many of the finds were made with the pioneer 202. your son being so young would probably do better with a bh 101. hope it helps,hh,

Stewart, I bought mine at walmart for same price and have been detecting for about 2 months. I am very happy with the 202, even bought the 4 inch coil
for it off Target's web site.:bounty: Since this is my first and only metal detector, no idea how its stands up to others but, I did alot of research before buying this one, including reading things on this forum!

hey stewart,

the BH202 has really done well for me. im new to the hobby and learning as i go. ive gotten alot of great advice from this website. Greyghost recommended that i get the 10" magnum coil and i found even more stuff at places i was already at. im getting better and better and feel that my BH202 is really pulling its weight. i just wish i could get out more than i do.
i wish your son luck.

Come on guys, make me feel bad why dont ya.I just bought a Minelab XT70 a few weeks ago.But I love it.
I want one with a LCD display,I think he would be more interested in it.
May just get one at WalMart, hey if it aint as good asI think it should be,90 day return policy.

Another Question about it, How long do the batteries last in those?

hello again stewart little, the xt 770 is a great machine and i wouldnt feel bad about owning one. i think its more about the persons ability to run the detector than the machine itself. i have seen the batteries last in the 202 for over 16 hours. its the number of beeps you get that deplete the batteries, not how long you actually search or the search itself. best 200 bucks i ever spent. hh,

I have had my 202 for about a month and it is fantastic, I even have the guys i hunt with ask me to run mine over there spots to confirm thier units and it always impresses them and they are using garrett250's

I've owned the 202 for nearly 5 years. I do not hesitate to hunt right along side much more expensive units. I may give up a couple of inches depth when competing with an expensive unit but for coins and things buried 6-8 inches it won't back off. My brother has a very nice White with whistles and bells. When we go out coin hunting I will always bring home as much or more than him. When you've got it set up right it refuses to pass up coins. In the last month I purchased the BH Time Ranger, BH's high end unit. Last week in the backyard I was playing with the TR and becoming familiar with settings and learning what it was trying to tell me. Just to make sure I was learning right, I would take my 202 and cover the same hit. If I knew what the 202 was saying I knew the TR was telling me the truth. I am now swinging the TR full time but I'm keeping the 202 as a trusty backup and an extra unit for anyone that cares to join me on a hunt. I only hope that if anyone borrows my 202 they don't find more than me. Excellent machine that has more than paid for itself. Joanincreek, I saw the picture of the ring you found with your new 202. It's just a solid, trustworthy machine.

I have a BH 202 bought at Walmart and I also have a Ace 250. After two years use of both I can say that there is just not that much difference in the two machines.

The BH 202 seems to be smoother and even a little deeper than the Ace 250. With the Ace you have to really turn down the sensitivity or all you get is a lot of false signals. When you turn down the sensitivity you lose even more depth.

The Ace does have pinpointing but that is iffy at best. Look at any Ace site and read the old posts and see all the people that have trouble with pinpointing with the Ace 250. Pinpointing seems to drift all over the place with my Ace 250 and has since day one.

The Ace 250 has a lot of loyal fans that really hype the Ace. They hype it so much that I don't even recognize the machine I have!

Both machines are good and will do the job but' at least in my area, the BH 202 is deeper and runs smoother (without a lot of falsing) than the Ace 250. Between the two I would have to give the BH 202 the edge.

The biggest difference between the BH 202 and the Ace 250? The BH 202 comes with a 5-year warranty and the Ace 250 comes with a 2-year warranty.
