Beware of Forum Reviews - I Had a Really Odd Thing Happen!

We all like to post pictures of our finds and sometimes show and comment on our detectors---well, be careful!

Some of you here know I like to buy detectors. I've bought and sold at least 5 Silver uMax's, 2 or 3 Tejon's, 4 Minelabs, and 3 Nautilus IIB's, etc., etc. in recent times. Sometimes I only keep one machine a couple weeks. I like buying and trying different detectors.

Well, I also like to do reviews on my various machines. Sometimes these reviews go poorly on one model of a certain brand, but the next machine (same brand and model) may go well. It may be the machine or it may be I learned the model better and therefore liked the second machine.

Let's face it, probably 90% of bad reviews are really due to the reviewer not understanding the machine that was tested---right?

Anyway, I just recently bought an excellent Nautilus IIB from a member of another forum. It's a great machine and works perfectly. But, being the way I am--I suddenly took the notion to get a new Fisher F70. So, I put the Nautilus on ebay and it sold fast.

This all happened last night. Early this morning I found an email from the nephew of the person who bought my machine stating his uncle wanted his money back because he (I guess the nephew) had read my review on this machine where I had written it had problems. I other words I had lied in my ad about the machine being excellent.

I wrote back to this nephew and informed him that the Nautilus IIB in that review wasn't this Nautilus IIB (IIB models all look alike). And that I had done that review when I didn't really understand Nautilus machines so the review itself wasn't accurate (most done by most people today aren't).

I then just gave his uncle a 100% refund and explained all this to him as well.

My guess is I won't hear from them again. Maybe they were on the up and up and maybe he just wanted his money back? You know, one of those late night purchases when we're really not with it.

Anyway, we all need to beware of what we post on any forum.

My personal position from here on will be as follows:

1. No more negative comments posted about detector brands unless I know beyond any doubt the criticism is accurate. In other words--no more "snap judgements."

2. No more positive comments about any brand or model unless I know beyond any doubt they are deserved praises.

3. I will tend not to mention the brand I use at a certain site unless asked by the readers. However, sometimes as in the case of videos this will be obvious, but I won't overemphasize the brand used as superior to every other brand.

I think we can all comment and share but we should all make sure that when its necessary to post the negative and positive we make very sure we've considered all the facts first.

As for the lost sale I'm glad about that. In tests this current Nautilus IIB has really impressed me and I should really give it a chance to prove itself---right?

Badger.I buy and sell detectors to feed my hobby addiction also.It sounds like buyer's remorse. But it is a good idea not to pick out the bad points of any thing you are trying to sell. The Metal Detecting community is small.Good luck with the Nautlius.

So much depends on how much a person is willing to put into learning a machine. You could have the best coin shooter on the market and have it perform so so If you don't take the time to learn the machine. We all have to take all the info. out there and then try to buy the machine we think we can learn.

I try to make my reviews constructive, and if I'm not to familiar with the machine I WILL state that.

xwyokid: Very general thing to say, but yet it's pretty accurate for most people.

But also the more detectors you use the easier it gets to use other machines as well. At least that's my case.

Good point lads.
