Interestingly Bob, I visited an 18th Century Museum which had an old time post office and the curator described how people at that time would cut coins into small pieces to pay for postage.
Funny, how few detectorists find these or at least post them.

Hey that is a bit. A bit is 12 1/2 cents. Remember that old basketball cheer - 2 bits, 4 bits, 6 bits, a dollar, all for Minelab, stand up and holler!!! lol
 
Well I was fortunate to find a quarter cut Large Cent.
 
YA I CAN SEE
the sm. cut of the LG. cent back in the day they made change but to cut up walker well maybe he ran out of SILVER solder to!!


i guess we will never know!
