Best Wet Sand Scoop

Tom Slick

Well-known member
After years of detecting the beach, I came up with what I think is the absolute best wet beach sand scoop. I know dry sand scoops are great for the dry and water scoops work great where you're dunking the scoop and using the water to help wash away the sand but what about for the guys hunting the wet sand and the very shallow wash areas? This is a trenching shovel about 12" long and 5"-6" wide with small sides welded on to keep the sand from falling off the sides. Holes are drilled in the shovel just to keep suction from holdong onto it. To use, step on it, pull back and tip to the side, spread the sand with your foot in one sideways swipe and retreive the target. Make sure you swipe the sand back into the hole when you're done. This works better than any available scoop (tried them all). I've used a straight handle for years, just cut it off and added a "T" from another shovel yesterday to see if I'll like it better. (Edit company name !!)

I like it! I've always found a small shovel to be easier to use in the wet sand and often times in dry sand as well. As long as the dry sand isn't falling in on itself, I'll always reach for the shovel before the long handles scooop.

I wonder if a similar one could be made by starting with a regular spade and folding in the edges?

I like it..almost like my old relic hunting shovel.....I'm still a long nose scoop man...13 inchs long by 7.5 inchs wide...Aluminum 3 pounds 13 ozs......

Sorry, but I don't see the benefit. I can dig some BIG holes in wet or dry sand with a scoop, and with one hand. I get to use the same tool for dry, wet, or in water digging.

you might scare the locals here with the shovel.I spent the last 2 days digging in softball size rocks on a washed out beach here in florida using a diamondhead stainless scoop.Really sifts fast too!.found 1 gold and 1silver ring in 5 hours of some tough digging.shovel would probly got me kicked out.
