Best way to clean beach/surf detector?

Hi All

I am getting a beach/surf detector soon (yahoo) and was wondering how you keep the units clean after beach/surf hunting? I assume you do clean them - salt not much good sitting on unit..
Do you wait til you get home, then hose the unit down, or wash it down at beach or what?
any ideas will be appreciated..
Now - any ideas how I can home in on the gold?? ha ha!
thanks!
John in New Zealand

Take the shafts apart, dry them and lube them with dry graphite and they'll never seize up. Don't ever say "I'll wash it tomorrow". The salt will screw it up big time.

John, as soon as I get home all equipment gets a hose down with fresh water. Then a good dose of silicone spray to inhibit corrosion. HH

when I get home and pull the shafts apart to hose and wipe them down.

I guess beng surrounded by fresh water is a blessing of sorts - iron though doesn't deteriorate as quickly in freshwater as it does in salt water.

Hey Ron, What is this DRY GRAPHITE, and where do you get it? Do you put it on the shaft after each outting, or what? Inquiring minds want to Know!! HH
