OK so I read in the manual that any coil that works on the MXT will work on the MX5 am I reading that correctly

Thank You Dan so now I think I know which coil I am going to order

Your dirt shouldn't have too much in the way of minerals. The 5.3 concentric is my go to coil for the MX5. The 4x6 shooter is a good coil, but is a DD.I live in Amarillo and the dirt is moderate. Concentrics will outwork a DD in this dirt and I'll bet yours isn't much different.
Good luck.

you didn't state what you plan to use it for (Coin & Jewelry Hunting or Relic Hunting or Both), the types of ground and site environment you will be working (low, moderate or high mineralization; grassy, dirt, rocky; sparse targets, modern trash, very iron littered older sites), and especially WHY you make a predetermined decision (a smaller Double-D type coil).

Why? Why haven't you owned a White's model of some sort, I'm curious, and having been registered on Findmall for 10 years and almost one-thousand posts, what HAVE you been using? Ever hunted with someone using a White's and made any in-the-field comparisons? What prompted you to select the MX5 from the White's model line? Did it come with the standard 9" Concentric spider coil?

Yes, kind of. Any coil that FITS the MXT and MXT Pro also FITS the M6, MX5, DFX, VX3 and V3i. But, just because they might FIT doesn't mean that they will WORK WELL for the particular needs you have for a coil.

Why?

I'll share my personal opinion here because it comes from being involved in this great sport for over half-a-century, owning and evaluating hundreds of makes and models of detectors, as well as hundreds of detector maker's search coils as well as after-market search coils. All this while hunting a very, very wide range of ground mineral environments, facing some tough trash target challenges, and deliberately making a lot of side-by-side comparisons afield as well as in some controlled testing.

That 'opinion,' or 'set of opinions,' is this: The past decade or more we have seen a growing trend, almost a 'fad', if you will, of people going after a Double-D search coil. We see almost exclusive DD coils offered by the after-market coil makers, but for a very good reason. That is so many people have been suckered into thinking a DD coil possesses some sort of magic performance and they can easily make a lot of sales if there is a 'DD' in the search coil's design name. You don't see a lot of Concentric coil offerings in the after-market business, and we have even seen manufacturers following a "popular trend" to fit their detectors with DD coils, often on models where it makes even less sense ... at least to me.

Concentric wound search coils offer many advantages over comparable-size DD coils and shouldn't be neglected in searching for a nice match between detector design features and circuitry performance and the search coil(s) best suited for the tasks at hand.

Does this mean I favor a good Concentric search coil? Yes, most definitely, for many detectors that have been designed to handle both coil types, and which seem to provide better performance with a Concentric coil. All four of my regular-carry Tesoro models have a Concentric coil mounted to them, with three wearing a 6" round Concentric and the fourth a standard 8X9 'OOR' (Out-Of-Round) Concentric. When I carried a Teknetics Omega 8000 I used a round 8" Concentric for most open-area/sparse-target searches, and an MX5 had the 6½" Concentric mounted and MXT Pro had the 9" Spider Concentric mounted and a 6½" Concentric on a spare lower rod, ready-to-use.

Does that mean I only own and use Concentric coils and not Double-D types? No. I also have the 5" Double-D for the Omega 8000, and my Makro Racer keeps the smaller 'OOR' coil mounted (a 4.7X5.2 DD). I also have two old-time favorites in my personal detector arsenal that I use on occasion in iron nail infested sites, and tote along to seminars to demonstrate some of the good performance we had from old basic 'TR' models that lacked Ground Balance, Discrimination, and other modern-day features. They are my Compass Coin Husstler, that has a 'standard' round 6" DD coil, and Compass 99B which has the 'standard' round 8" DD coil. So, NO, I am not totally loyal to Concentric coils, but I am partial to selecting the better all-purpose coil for the detector in hand and the tasks I plan to take on.

Yes, they make the 'Shooter' coil which they call a 4X6 elliptical DD. I have owned at least two of them, compared many others, and also used some after-marked smaller DD coils, such as the round 5" and 6" Detech Excelerator DD coils and their 6X8 SEF DD coil, and one or two others. In all of the comparisons, evaluating their ability to handle dense iron trash, challenging ground conditions, and provide the most consistent, tighter-reading Target ID and VDI number, none of those would beat the White's 6½" round Concentric coil, the 5.3 Eclipse.

That is the coil I kept on the MX5 full-time when I had one, and in trashier places that is the coil I used on the original MXT and the MXT Pro models, too.

Those are just my opinions, but I am still left curious why you picked a White's MX5 and why you want a DD coil, as well as what you're after in what type of environments.

As much as i try and like the 5.3 coil on my DFX i still always drift back to using the SEF8x6 coil,my favourite small coil which is alas not on a Whites machine is the T2 5'' DD coil, that stays on the machine most of the time when i am on trashy roman sites or on stiff stubble like we have at the moment.

Out later on so may try and give the 5.3 coil another session, have never used the 4x6 shooter coil as i feel that i have enough coils to cover most trashy sites, would like to try a MX5 just to see what they are like.

DD coil Is just what I have used mainly and Like them ,as for as ground here in north Texas where I hunt ground is not highly mineralized in most locations but in some areas they are very trashy as I hunt a lot of bulldozed lots after houses and buildings torn down . Also let me correct myself as I am old and sometimes a tad senile I reflect back and did own a Whites IDX pro almost 25 yrs ago but never did like it so I gave it away .I mainly hunt for coins and relics as well on old farm land I currently use an AT Pro but can't swing it for more than an hour before the arm starts giving out so I did a little research and borrowed an MX5 from a friend and used it the weight is nothing and setup is a breeze .Back to the coil issue could just be me but I think the DD coils separate better than the concentrics but that is just me I know everyone has their own opinions. Also thanks Monte I have always enjoyed and respected your comments and knowledge

YEs you are right about the dirt and after some more tossing the coil types around I have chosen the 5.3 coil and will give it a try as I have had many tell me that it is really a great coil so we will see Thanks for all the responses

OH Yea Monte forgot to answer your Question on what I have been using for most of the time I have been detecting , ' Tesoro mainly the non metered "and Shadow X2 were my chosen machines

My personal experience has been great with the SEF WSS 5x10 coil on my MX5. Depth is still good and cuts like a knife, target is dead conter of the coil.
