Best scoop specs

Moving from coin shooting to beach hunting for the summer w my minelab safari - so, it's time to invest in some scoops! I've heard some talk about aluminum vs steel, hand scoop vs pole, wood pole vs metal, and wondered what kind of scoops worked best for you vets.

The sooner I order the better with the holiday weekend coming up! :drinking:

The Pro/scoop is what I've been using.Real good scoop for hard shell areas.also have a Beach Brute aluminum scoop that works good for sand areas that that doesn't have a hard bottom..If not water hunting there are smaller stainless and aluminum scoops made by Reilly.Everybody has a favorite and these are 2 of mine for in the water.

It depends on a couple of things.

RTG scoops work really well. RTG stands for Reilly's Treasure Gold (look at the banner up top.)

People prefer bigger scoops in the water hoping to scoop that target on the first try. With a Safari you are not going in the water deeper than your ankles.

Some break down for easy travel. If you are going in a car who needs to break it down.

Aluminum is lighter but the lip will start to curl if you dig in rocks. Aluminum also will make your hands and clothing black. I sprayed the handle of my aluminum scoop with bed liner to help counter act this.

There is an Aluminum scoop with a stainless lip riveted on. This scoop gets good reviews.

Stainless is heavier. But a stainless RTG scoop is manageable. It won't turn you black. It is stronger. It is more expensive. It makes a hell of a club for trouble makers and sea creatures also.

If you go the big bucket route get yourself a scoop with a grab handle.

Another option is a simple spade, i prefer the spade to the scoop on the damp sand as its quicker for the deep stuff unless the sand is so wet you get constant cave ins, ok on the dry too combined with a sieve

I use the Beach Brute II with a few modifications. I put stainless bolts through the places where the scoop was screwed together. I also cut the handle down a bit.

I then put a stainless steel lip over the scoop edge for two reasons. The first reason is to make the scoop lip better to stand up to any bending. Secondly, it seems that stainless steel cuts into the ground weather it is sand or mud better than aluminum.

A scoop is the only way to go with wet or dry sand.
