Best pinpointer?

Hello

Just received my ACE 250 and immediately realized why people are buying pinpointers. Any suggestions which one to buy? Which one is the best?

Have you looked at the sunray inline probe ? there's a field test at the top of this page..You get all the benefits of a probe with all the sounds of your ace

One of my buying decisions for buying the Ace, was that you can get the inline probe for it. However, after becoming familiar with it and learned how to pinpoint with it; I consider that it is one detector that doesn't need a probe.
There are several pinpointing methods available to the Ace. To learn them, may I suggest that you take a coin into your back yard to practice. The one in the instruction manual is the hardest and takes some concentrating on your part. With the coin on the ground, place the coil on the ground next to it and press and hold down the pinpoint button, then pass it over the coin. Watch the intensity metre at the top of the screen. as you get the coin centred (you may need to lift the coil off the ground a ways to make sense of it) you will note that most or all of the notches are lit up. Maneuvering the coil from side to side, figure out where the centre of the signal is. When you have figured this out, then slide it to and from your body, so that you get the coin centred in this direction as well. It takes practice to get this method working.
The second method and by far the easiest and most popular, is by pinpointing off the 12 o'clock position of the inner coil. It also gives you the best amount of target information too (once you have spent time with the Ace.) This method is best for targets less than 6 inches deep (most).
The third method is for deeper or targets that you are otherwise having trouble pinpointing. Start by having the coil beside the location of the target. Press and hold the pinpoint button, then side it over the target. Once you have got it close the the centre of the coil, release then immediately repress the pinpoint button again. This is called shrinking (detuning). The detector will now only give a 3in wide signal in the front half of the inner coil. centre the coil over the target an push the coil away from you till you lose the signal. Practicing on this on the coin that you can see will deliver it directly into the cut out in the middle of the coil. It will do it that the same level of accuracy no matter how deep the target is.
Good luck with the Ace. You have a great little detector in your hands. Don't mind some of the early frustrations that you may experience at first. That is quite normal no matter what detector you use and will quickly pass.

I have a tintec probe and its good, I have used the Bulleye and that was awesome. The bad part about putting the sunray on you ace, is that it costs just about as much as the detector does... but if your looking for the best, get the sunray. and of course, no body needs a pinpointer, but it greatly speeds up the recovery of your find. I use mine on almost all of my plugs.

Dunno. I can pinpoint very well with the ace 250, but still prefer to use
a pinpointer.
It still speeds up finding the target a good bit vs not using one.
It's really noticable on very small items that are real dirty.
It's not a *must have" by any means, but I much prefer having one
vs not. I use it on most every hole. If the one I have breaks, I'll
be getting another one.
I'll pinpoint with the 250, then dig the trench with the probe, and stick
the pinpointer in the trench. It goes off most of the time on the first
dip. You know right off the bat the location in the hole the object is at.
I've detected and found stuff like BB's, and it would take quite a bit
longer to find the tiny stuff with the gumbo clay soil we have here.
With the pinpointer, the small stuff is a snap.
As far as best, I dunno.. I've only used the automax so far..
If it breaks, I might consider trying a vibraprobe.. I think I prefer
a hand held, vs one connected to the 250..

I like the Vibrapobe. It's built tough, is water proof, has an outomatic shutoff and is turned on by holding it upside down for a couple of seconds. Below is a link to 15 different pinpointers. Good luck!
