best pinpointer under $100?

Hi everyone. I've been looking at various pinpointers under $100, and wanted to get some opinions on them. I'm mainly interested in the bounty hunter or tinytec, but I'm open to other suggestions. Also, I've herd that tinytec has halted sales of its pinpointer due to health concerns. Anyone know anything about this? Thanks and HH in advance!

Plus some dealers still have Propointer packages in stock that include the free bonuses - pouch, probe, digger, books.

I don't think the package is worth $30 dollars like Garrett says and the pouch and composite digger are entry level items, but still nice to get if you're ordering the Propointer anyway. And the brass probe is worthwhile.

The two little Charles Garrett books are worth reading, especially if you're new to detecting.

But none of that is the reason to get the Propointer.

The reason to get it is that it's just a flat out gem. A simple and effective tool that makes recovering targets easier and faster and it's solid as a rock.

Hey, the one at Harbor Freight for $19.95 is hard to beat! I modified mine (see Bounty Hunter Forum)
But it's Ok out of the box. Some have said it's a little fragile, but for the price, you can buy half a dozen of 'em, toss in a Baloney sandwich and have money left for some travelin' gas..........!

The Garrett PRO-POINTER is a great all around pin pointer. A new one can be bought for $127.50. When I hunt in tot lots or sandy areas I use my Tinytec Deluxe. I have a harbor freight for back-up but have not used it much.

The ergonomics are terrible on these cheap pin pointers.Pay the extra money and avoid carpel tunnel.

Don't buy the cheapies. If you hunt often, in all types of weather (which you should anyways) spend the money on a pinpointer that will last. I have had my share of cheapies and they wear out quickly and don't tune in bad weather. Pinpointers can save a $1,000.00 coin from becoming a $300.00 coin because of a scratch on it from your digger.

Most all the others have a sensitivity adjustment that you have to mess with all the time. The self adjusting feature alone is worth the extra $27.00 If there was a cheaper pinpointer that was better and cheaper than the Garrett I would tell you. I just like John tried many and many failed. I even made pinpointers years ago and sold them. But even those were not as good as the Garrett. I still keep a couple of my custom made pinpointers for back up. But it doesn't look like I'll ever need them. I believe you are wanting a nice pinpointer because you said $100 or less. Not $15.00 or less. So just buy the nice one and be done with it.

The Propointer is the gold standard in my book. Or maybe that should be the :garrett: green standard.

But there's a guy over on the :bounty: forum who says he gets 5-6 inches on a coin with his Cen-Tech.

So did he get a really special pinpointer?

I've had two Cen-Techs and they each got about an inch on a coin.

Chinese quality control is poor, but could there really be that much variance from unit to unit?

I used a vibra probe 560 for a few years, then got the pro pointer last year. My first reaction was it had too much detectioning range as I would really get fustrasted when in a trashy area. Actually carried both and would sometimes use the v-probe to pin point for the pro-pointer. Yeah-sounds crazy but worked for me. Then I heard some one ( Uncle willie I think) mention that the propointer can be detuned just like the my 1500. I must have missed this in the instructions. Now I have mastered the detuning process pretty good and don't carry both. The v-probe was a life saver when I got it but it is still available as a backup if needed.
Thanks-Al

That pinpointer has the attention of the whole industry. In the end...it seems to be the best one for most folks.

To me, they fall into two categories, and the one is pretty much dominated by SunRay. That is the in-line pinpointing probe.

But for hand-held, stand alone electronic pinpointers there have been some good ones, like the White's BullsEye or Vibra Probes, some lesser versions like the Centech and many others. Some that were better in performance, like the Treasure Mate, built by Tesoro, that requires manual tuning but gives decent depth. Detector Pro has provided us with a couple of top performing (for depth) designs, too, but they are either too expensive for some, or too bulky

I haven't been a big fan of pinpointers due to either poor depth and performance, cheap construction or bulk/awkward physical design. I always felt if there was a decent hand-held pinpointer that provided me good functional depth in a comfortable hand-held design that was durable, I'd own one and use it.

My detector battery is made up of White's models, modified or stock, and one low-cost Garrett ... the Pro-Pointer. It is the best quality constructed pinpointer on the market. period!

The best for under $100.00 is definitly the Deteknix xpointer, it will preform just as well as the Garrett pinpointer. I have bought and woudn't get rid of either one.
