Best Headphones

What are the best headphones for a Minelab Sovereign metal detector? Detectorpro Black Widows, Killer bees or something else?

Good question, I am also in the market for some good quality headphones, I am leaning towards the original Grey Ghost.

I like killer bees. I like the sound of the Koss ur30 but I don't like the way they're made.

Headphones are subject to a lot of discussion as to which one is the best.

Everyone is different as far as what they hear. Some can hear low tones better than high. Some cannot hear high tones at all. Some people have tinnitus...ringing of the ears and cannot hear much at all. Some people wear hearing aids and so certain headphones will not work for them. Some people have really big ears and so they cannot wear a standard set of headphones without having to fold their ears back......don't laugh...I have a friend who's ears are huge and she is thinking of getting an ear reduction. Each headphone has different specifications as to what each can do as far as frequency, volume etc.

There is no BEST headphone that will be best for everyone. The only way to know which is best for you is to try them. The problem is, that can get pretty expensive with all the headphones out there.

To me, the best headphone is one that kills most of the exterior noise like waves, wind, traffic, etc. The best headphone to me is one that allows me to hear the slightest warble of the signal. The best headphone to me is one that allows me to adjust the volume. The best headphone to me is one that is very comfortable to wear for extended periods of time without getting me all sweaty around the ears.

Maybe your best headphone would be totally different than what my best headphone would be. That is why you hear so many different opinions about each and every headphone out there.

So to answer your question.....It is up to you and not what anyone else thinks!

I have been through the headphone chaos when choosing a pair for my Sovereign GT. At first everyone including people in the forum and a video presentation by Des Dunne of Minelab, stated that you need to have a pair of headphones rated at 32ohms. Well I did not listen and went out to get a pair of Killer B's. I noticed that the Killer B's at approximately 150ohms made the sovereign tones sound blended together. Pull tabs and coins sounded the same to me. I then got a pair of cheap headphones rated at 32ohms which where under ten bucks. The cheaper 32ohm headphones sounded way better on my GT and the tones where more pronounced. Currently I am using a pair of GARRETT ClearSound Easy Stow headphones and they are perfect. Under thirty bucks and with an inline volume control. So in the end if you want the best headphones for the Sovereign you do not need the most expensive High End. For me, the Garrett Easy Stow or perhaps the Treasure Ear headphones from Detector Pro which are both 32ohms are the best choice.

Take Care

black widows block the outside noise really well and have excellent audio so they are great for beach hunting, which is what I do the most.

I have tried a lot of different sets and still trying more as I need volume, comfort to wear all day, good tone quality to tell the tones differences with the Sovereigns and my E - Trac and found that ones that work with my Sovereigns dont work good for my E-Trac and the ones that work real good with the E-Trac dont for the Sovereigns. For the Sovereigns the Timberwolfs work excellent as the volume is there plus the tones are real good. I just tried a different brand set on my E-Trac that work real good and havent tried them on the Sovereign yet, but will soon and hope they will as the Timberwolfs are no longer being made and the ones for my E-Trac also not being made at this time, they were the Troy Pros which are not being made at this time. I think if my hearing wasnt so bad the Sun Ray Pro Golds would be excellent as everything about them is good, but for me the volume is not loud enough for me.
There is many different brands out there made for detecting and would stay with one of the better ones made to last and have the comfort to wear them for the extended time we use them plus are built to last.

All head sets that come on the Excals are WATERPROOF as far as I know.
I have the stock yellow ones on one of my Excal ll with Grey Ghost underwater on my other Excal ll and used the old blue headphones on the older Excal 1000 which were also waterproof. I have dove as deep as 50' with all of them with no problems other than I hated the fit of the stock yellow and blue ones and love the Grey Ghost for fit in the water.

Maybe another avenue is to make your own..Peltors 105 Earmuffs, Ceramic piezoelectric transducers ..and the 3M Peltor HY80 Gel Ear Seals
