Best Garrett detector for Forrest Fenn’s treasure chest

I’ve been searching a small area where I think Forrest Fenn’s famous treasure might be buried, and I’m looking for some expert advice on what detector would give me the most depth for that target.

The chest is 10” x 10” x 5” and is made of wood with a cast bronze exterior. Inside is mostly gold—coins, jewelry, and nuggets. It weighs 42 pounds.

The ground is wet, and I think it’s fairly mineralized (my Garrett AT Pro-Pointer goes off when I stick it in the ground).

I’ve searched the spot already with a Garrett AT Gold, but I think it’s possible that the chest is deeper than that machine was able to detect. I had it on Disc 1 mode (I should have used the All Metal) with the standard, 5 x 8 coil. Also, it was early spring, when the place gets flooded—I had to search with the coil immersed in a foot of water.

I want to search the spot one more time with the deepest-reaching detector I can get for a target of that size and material. The Eagle Eye Depth Multiplier is out, since hiking with that thing would be too awkward (and anyway this video suggests that it doesn’t really add much depth to the GTI 2500’s largest coil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnRP7gd140U). My candidates so far are the Garrett ATX with the 20-inch Deepseeker coil, the GTI 2500 with the 12.5-inch coil, and the AT Max with the 9 x 12 coil. Which of these would go deepest for my target? Is there another detector that would go deeper?

Thank you very much for reading this and for any help you’re able to give!

John

If your looking for deep relics (treasure) lower that 2-3' you need a 'two-boxer', I don't know of any modern ones (fisher perhaps) but I would be looking for a Garrett Master Hunter with the two boxer setup on Evil Buy. Modern detectors will punch deep, more or less. Big, deep targets in wet soil will be detected by the ACE range detectors. I had some big targets, too large to be be coins at a park and found out later that the council had used rubbish as fill decades back and there were flattened car bodies 6' down in waterlogged soil. I was back there a couple of weeks back and not a peep from the ACE but once the rains come and the water table lifts those crushed cars will make themselves known again.

Try a two boxer!

Best of luck!

I'm now thinking I'll go with the Fisher Gemini-3 or the White's TM 808. It seems like either of those would go deeper than FF's chest could possibly be buried, so that I'll know for sure that the thing isn't there if the detector doesn't get a hit. That, I realize, is the most likely outcome of this adventure.

The Infinium could be the best because the wet and mineralized soil, after this one, a TM808 in manual mode but suffer with the mineralized ground. HH JorgeVc
