Best find of the year, Viking age grave

Hi to you all.

On the 1. of January I did an amazing find, :surprised:
A find most detectorists will never get.

I found an early viking age sword! As soon as i realized what it was i carefully put it back in the hole and covered it back up.
Then I called my "state Archaeologist" and told him about my find. He was very thrilled.

Today he came to excavate my find. (Third of January)
(You see, In Norway, all finds dating from before 1537 is automatically protected by law)
And as he dug we found a complete sword (broken in 5 pices), 1 battle-ax and a scythe.
Even thou the person that was buried there is dissolved and not to be found, It is still most definitely a grave.

After he had removed the Items I checked the grave with my detector and there was still two pices left.
But they will be staying in the ground until the summer. Then it will be a bigger excavation, as it might be more than one grave there.

That is sooooo coool! :clapping:

Hope to see more on this when it gets opened up!

Congrats on making the initial find. Excellent! And THANKS for doing the right thing. HH Randy

That is amazing. Good for you for getting an archaeologist involved. Look forward to seeing the pictures and hearing more.

Truly amazing finds, Bard! Congratulations. Things like that are unheard of in this country, so, I can only imagine the thrill you must have felt with this discovery. Was the sword broken from deterioration or some other factor(s)? How about the axe and scythe, were they intact?

Please be sure to send some pictures when possible. Judging from what was contained in your post, you might try storing your pictures on a site like Photobucket.com and they post the link on your forum post. Photobucket will automatically re-size the photo for you.

Stay safe and congratulations, again!!

Will do my friend.. The sword was broken before I started digging. By the looks it have been broken for hundreds of years, maybe from plowing og from cows walking the land a wet rainy summer. No one can say for sure yet.

The sword might be a Petterson Type B

I'm going to pass this along to our friends at Minelab.

What are the chances that the sword was broken before the items were buried. The depth seems not deep enough for a grave. Maybe left in pieces from a battle or fight. What do you think?

Nice find. Keep us posted on what is found out. Thanks for the post. Happy Hunting.

Awesome!

That's all I got, simply AWESOME!

Of all the finds that have been posted on Findmall, this has to be amongst the top!!! So glad you were able to get pictures in your post, they are breathtaking and I can only imagine what you must have felt when you first uncovered the find! You are going to have to go a long way to top this one!!!

Congratulations!! And thank you for sharing the photos!!

That is very cool. Good job bringing it back to life.

You sir are an honorable man and it appears that your laws seem to be well written and understandable. If I say anything about our laws, I'm going to ruin my morning..

Now that is some kind find, but I don't think I'd wanna dig a grave, kinda spooky. I dug a Indian grave in Arizona once before they ban digging ruins, founds some pottery bowls, arrow heads and what was left of his or her cloths. I was going to take them home and thought this dude might get pissed and come to the house wanting his pants back, and he wouldn't be a happy camper. so I just covered them back up and left. But you have found history that can be put in a museum for all to enjoy, way to go.

Thanks guys

You can read a more detailed post at Minelab Success stories,
or at the latest issue of Relic Hunter Magazine.

Me and the archaeologists did a bigger excavation a few days after the county archaeologist dug up the sword.
I'll see if i can upload some photos when I get home from work ;)
