Best digital for relics?

Hi Rick,
Can you tell me what is a good camera for taking good clear pictures of metal detecting finds, particularly relics that you can not capture on a flatbed scanner?
I would also use it some to take informal family photos, and other events at our church for multimedia presentations.
I had thought about the Nikon Coolpix 995 and have heard it is pretty versatile, but balk as I hope for a SLR like my film cameras.
I use Nikon N80, and Minolta 800si. I will probably stay with Nikon or Canon in film cameras, and hope to someday use the lens sets for both digital and film.
However, it seems that SLR digital cameras are still out of my range in price.
I wouldn't balk too in paying $1000, but not $3000.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Alton

I'm not aware of any SLR type digital in the $1000.00 price range.....
Don't know what else to tell you.......
Nikon's Coolpix line is great for a consumer digital though.....

Take a look at the Olympus E-10. It can be found for right around a Thousand dollars thru some of the mail order houses. It is a thru the lens reflex camera like the 35MM slr's. It does not have true changeable lenses like a 35MM SLR but does have add on lenses. It takes outstanding pictures in several different formats from internet size up to full 8X10 photo quality. The link below will give you a full review with all the details about the camera. It is as close as you will get for under 3 grand. You can also try the Olympus site although the link will give you more detail.
If you want to shop prices go to this site. http://shopper.cnet.com/shopping/resellers/0-11326-311-3255118-3.html?fl=0&tag=st.sh.11326-311-3255118.sort.price

After posting the above I read several other reviews and found that the Sony DSC-F707 might fill your needs for about $200.00 less. It is rated higher than the Olympus E-10 though I must say looks wise I am more impressed with the the E-10. A search of the Cnet site listed a couple of dealers right around $825.00 + shipping.

I'll keep an eye on this forum. I still have some time to shop.
