Best digital camera under $1,000?

I'm in the market for a new digital camera used primarily for taking closeups of coins and finds. Thought I wanted a Cannon G5 but they seem a little cheezy. I realize most will be plastic but the G5 seems to have a cheezy plastic build. Didn't like some of the controls either.
One thing I'd really like is a camera that could get the white balance correct or manual control over this so for example a silver coin looks silver. My old camera is a Cannon Powershot 20 and its quite frustrating to use, the colors never come out correct and I have tried all sorts of lighting and settings. I think I want manual focus also since the autofocus on some cameras doesn't work too well.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

I have the Fuji S7000 and I love it. It has all the manual control I want and has macro and super macro as well. Price after $100.00 rebate runs around 459.00 on some decent web sites. There are other cameras out there but for the money it's is hard to beat this one. Just my two cents worth.
Good luck.http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Fujifilm/fuji_finepixs7000.asp
