Hi,
I have been researching and I think I can finally ask the questions correctly. If - a big IF - money is no object are the $4000 GPX4000 minelab machines the best you can get?
Can the best machines use different coils? What I am thinking here is that if I get a good Whites or Minelab so I can go deep prospecting can I also switch coils so as not to miss shallower and smaller targets?
I understand there is a learning curve and I have been told to get a simple machine at first (I am just beginning) but it isn't like these machines get used up right? I won't be able to buy several machines but right now I can spend a good bit (up to $1500 but I could borrow up to $4000) and learn the machine and grow into it.
After looking a good bit I don't see too many high end machines for sale used. Am I looking in the wrong places or are there just not that many out there?
I'm also hoping to get something with good resale value just in case.
It looks like Kelly Co is the best bet for buying a new machine. Does this sound right? I see that Dixie is having a sale and I will call them too. The packages with extras seem like good deals.
Mostly I will be prospecting and cache hunting through Arizona, NM and eastern CA. I am currently in LA and there are some parks etc around where I will be learning before taking a month long trip through the southwest to find my fortune in lost gold, hidden caches and lost mines. The usual I suppose. Out in the desert I imagine I can carry a decent shovel without getting into trouble - I know I will be digging a lot!
Really, if I find something I'll be thrilled of course but that isn't the main goal of my project. I just want to do it and write about it. But while I'm doing it I don't want to miss something that is just a few inches below the range of my detector!
I will also be able to practice just an hour or so east of LA where people find some nuggets and do a lot of panning. I can climb some steep hills so I'm hoping to find where those nuggets came from!
Thanks for any advice on which detectors seem to be the best and the range of coil question. (It seems a lot of people have many different machines - hopefully I can get a good one for land and just switch coils?)
This forum is great by the way! I've been reading for at least 5 hours over the last few days.
