Best detector for the beach?

Hello all,
I am new to treasure hunting, and I am interested in some opinions on which detector would be best for me. I live in Florida and would be primarily hunting on the beach and along the surf-line. I was considering the Sand Shark. Is this a decent choice?

The Sand Shark is a nice Pulse detector. It doesn't have any discrimination on it so you will be digging every target. If you have time to dig all then the SS may be for you. One plus it has is the Lifetime warranty, something I consider very important for a beach/water detector.

I live in Florida and as a first detector I would get a CZ-5 or a Minelab Sov. Great depth on beaches and easily hip mountable. Not water proof, though.

For water hunting a CZ-20 would be my first choice due to it's well built case and lifetime warranty.

For a second water hunting unit I would get a Minelab Excal. Very good electronics, not so good construction.

You can pick up a Minelab Sov used at very reaonable prices on the classifieds. I would get one with the switchable frequency.

I'd stay away from the Sandshark. It is an OK machine but there are other PI machines that will go a lot deeper. I have one and I usually lend it out if someone wants to try a PI machine.

I also have a couple of Fisher CZ's and some Minelabs. The CZ would be a good detector for want you want to do.

I would recommend to get a new or used Minelab Sovereign. The Sovereign is the best beach detector for the money out there. I used my Sovereign as my main beach machine until I got my Explorer. I still use it from time to time.

In my opinion the Sovereign is what you should get. It is a little heavy but you can hip or chest mount it. The Sovereign also has more options as far as after market coils are concerned. The Sovereign with the 15" WOT coil is a killer combo for the beach.

Good Luck,

HH Randy
