Best Day this Year so Far

Well it was the 16th of June and I was at a lake the police have been called on me 11 different times now. I call it snob lake because it is surrounded by millionaires. HOWEVER it isn't a private lake and the ticket I got last year was dismissed. BUT, instead of fighting with the rich folks, I decided to call somebody and got permission where I didn't need it just to appease them. HOWEVER, in coming to shallow water I look up and guess who is waiting for me? A friendly officer of the law. He says " Mr. Grattan. why am I here?" I said " I have NO idea" he said "you're trespassing." I said " No I am not" He said "Yes you are" I said "NO, I have permission" He said from who. I told him. I also went to my truck and gave him his number. He said " He should have let everyone know" I said "He did let every one of the members know, he can't tell everyone in the neighborhood!" We had a good talk and he left. I haven't been bothered again.

So anyway, This drop-off goes down and down and at the FIRST thermocline I STOP. Gets way too frigging cold!! I have to go deeper though and might rent a dry-suit. The targets are so plentiful the CZ-21 nulls out a lot. If you get ANY kind of beep you dig and dig and watch what flies out of the hole. Two of the gold rings and a lot of the silver coins were eyeball finds. Along with the earring. So many nails, screws and other trash along with the good stuff you just have to keep fanning and picking up everything.

I have more but this is just an idea. ONE or TWO might be on the wrong date. I have hit this place hard with my friend Kevin who also has gotten a few gold. My oldest DATED ring is March 31, 1906. His oldest is a class ring of 1950.

I have lots of pictures of the goods from this lake and will be taking many more. I can't wait to go deeper and find out what migrated to the bottom of this drop off. I love all the lead toys I am finding. Along with the machine gunner, I have another lead soldier, two lead cars and a toy lead pistol not pictured.

Thanks for reading. Enjoy your summer!!

On the 16th I found 5 gold rings, one gold earring, 13 silver coins, 5 silver rings and two silver bracelets. One of the bracelets only the face was silver 21 grams of it. The rest was stainless steel. The big ring is also stainless steel.

Lots of great recoveries and finds. Congrats on those hunts.

Awesome bunch of finds, just incredible.... I think its time for you to turn the tables on whom ever has called the police 11 times.. if you are not in the wrong then those people should be charged with harassment in my opinion...fight the good fight and congrats on a great bunch of finds...

Robert handles those kinds of situations with remarkable aplomb...I learned a lot from his posts a few years back dealing with this lake and the people that think they 'own' it...some folks just like to look out the window and wait for a chance to bust somebodies clanks, too bad for them, 'cause Robert has a pair of brass ones that can take quite a pounding with no ill effects it seems..
Mud.

Well since I was a cop for 9 years I know how to put up with most police situations. HOWEVER sometimes I get too bold and have recieved 3 citations. ALL have been dismissed though. Some cops feel they can make their own laws.

An officer did tell the people that they would get a citation for harrassment if they kept it up. No, I have NEVER been in the wrong. I don't trespass or TRY to cause any confrontations.

I found a 357 mag pistol in this lake and I had to threaten the chief of police with a lawsuit before I got it back. In fact I was on my way down to file it when I got the call I could pick it up IF I had a purchace permit. I was one step ahead of the department and already had the permit.

I don't bother anyone at the bottom of any lake and I deserve not to be bothered either.

Great finds and glad you're posting again. Wish I had more luck at the river/lake this Saturday, but still enjoyed myself. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your finds.

Great feeling to have all your ducks in a row and earn a nice payoff for yourself!!

Congrats SD!!

scubadetector,
Good to see you posting!

Terrific hunts in that lake. Sounds like there will be a lot more coming out of that lake. Looking forward to seeing at least some of it posted.
Cheers,

Always so great and interesting finds!!Enjoy seeing! Thanks for posting...

When I went to the lake/river the other day, I tried to wade out up to my forehead and use the mask and snorkel. Without a weight belt, neutral buoyancy threw me around like a Styrofoam cup. I couldn't stay on target or use my scoop effectively. The wake from all the boats were pretty strong. Some huge boats use this river/lake and they have only one speed: wide open. Some of the waves created by these wakes must have been over 2 feet and that's nothing to people who detect in the surf, but on fresh water, it pushes me around. Saw my first sailboat on the river and a catamaran with a huge sail. Only found 20 coins for $1.93 and no jewelry this time around. Switching back to the 5 X 8 coil on the At/Pro. Felt like a bull in a china shop with the stock coil on after getting used to the 5 X 8 coil. Sure thought there would be some fresh drops after the large crowd on the 4th of July.

You can wear a weight belt with a little weight to help you stay put. KNOW how to ditch it in case of emergency and IF you use a mask and snorkel in most states you need a dive flag by law. Some states boaters have to stay 100 foot away, Michigan law is 200 foot away. Most states boaters are respnsible for any damage they do with their wake also.

I plan to get a weight belt with a quick release and guess I better put a bracket on my floating sifter and stick a dive flag on it for safety. The boats around here might use the diver's flag for target practice, but hopefully not. I'm staying away from the river for a few weeks and trying to hit some other spots.
