Best combination of coils for the Tejon

x99

New member
I'm very close to purchasing the Tejon. I will probably buy a "full package" from the start to save some money. I need something for clean and trashy parks. But also for woods, fields and other open areas. I will hunt for all kind of coins, gold rings etc. but I wouldn't say no to other interesting objects (you never know what's in the ground).

Would this be a good combination?

1. Detech s.e.f 13" ultimate coil
2. Standard Tejon coil 9 x 8"
3. h.o.t 5.75" widescan

Or would you from your experience recommend something different? What about the round 8" concentric coil?

Thank you in advance.

For me I have had several coils and all seem to give about the same depth. But I have settled in on 10" elliptical, it does good in the trash, covers a lot of ground, depth is as good or better than the stock 9x8, and it is about as hot as you can get on the jewelry.

It does it all for me,

Thank you for the answer. I would agree that a 10" coil would be enough, but as I went to a remote place without any trash, or any signal at all, it was a nightmare using my 9" Deus coil, which is not much smaller. I walked very frustrated for hours, swinging the coil without almost any response. If it is a remote place, which has nothing to offer, you will cover as much ground as you can. In such situations a 13" coil would be a huge improvement.

I use the 8 inch doughnut coil.

The black one? Is there any advantage to the stock coil?

Mine is a dark chocolate brown with no labeling.

I use doughnut coils on all my Tesoro detectors., because they're lighter, just as deep and are easier to pinpoint with. I just love that coil.

The one that I have for my Vaquero and Tejon was special made with the shorter cable. :detecting:

Thank you. What about coil number 3 ("5.75" widescan")? Would it be a good choice for trashy areas?

Well it would be for trashy sites, but not for LARGE open area's where you want a lot of coverage.
My brother Ron (WV62) and I landed on the same idea for a coil on our Tejon's and that's the elliptical, he uses the 10" and I got the NEL 5.5"x 9.5" This size seems to give the best coverage with a long narrow path and still move through a trashy area pretty good and the weight is good for the coverage.

But, I take it that you already shot that Idea down in an earlier post due to lack of coverage, but I'm not sure why your considering the 8" donut coil? from heel to toe its only 8" where the elliptical is 10"? that's not to say that the 8" isn't a good coil.

I think you misunderstood me (or probably I did not explain it clearly). I was asking about the "best" coil for every specific purpose (a combination of 3 coils). If there is a "better" coil than the h.o.t 5.75" widescan for the same kind of job, I would take the advise.

I was watching a few videos from this guy and I liked what I saw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eflNqgSSlyg

I ordered the Tejon with the stock coil and Detech s.e.f 13" ultimate coil. Instead of the h.o.t 5.75" widescan, I took the new Detech 10x5" s.e.f WSS Coil. Now I'm set for all kinds of hunting scenarios. I never had a Tesoro, but I have a good feeling, that this machine will suit me.

Congrats on the Tejon, I think you will be pleased with its performance and you will love that that toggle switch.

I think the three you've chosen would cover just about any situation. I don't have any experience with the S.E.F. though. If you're going to be hitting a lot of cellar holes with tons of nails and junk iron around, I'd give the nod to the 5.75 concentric rather than the 5.75 widescan. I have both and the concentric does a little better job of discriminating the goodies out of the iron. The 5.75 widescan, however, would really save the day if you're hunting a site with hot ground. I know a lot of folks use them with their Tejons in the heavily mineralized soil of Virginia. The 9x8 is just a great all-around coil. Goes deep and also does a surprisingly good job in the trash.

Thanks! I was going for the 5.75 widescan first, because of videos from "Digger Gear" on Youtube. Unfortunately the coil was not available at my store of choice, so I took their advice and went for the new Detech s.e.f WSS 10x5. Should there still be problems in trashy areas, I will consider one of the 5.75.

After using the 10x5" coil I finally tried the 13" ultimate yesterday. At first I was very surprised how much ground it covers, but after a while I got a little bit disappointed with the overall weight. I am not the weakest person on earth, but I felt uncomfortable (sometimes I use White's Eagle which is heavier, but due to a lighter coil I can swing it much faster). I think it is the coil together with the weight of the detector, because the 10x5 + Tejon combo feels much better. "Swinging" is the problem, not the carrying.

How could I fix this? Is there maybe a lighter stem or an other solution for the Tejon?

The 13" puts a lot of weight on the front .It's like picking up a bowling ball with a spoon .If you're going to keep it you may want to consider a "swingy thingy ".I had one on another heavier brand of detector and even though it may have had 2" more of coverage it never found anything as deep as the factory original did .The factory coil had a much sharper tone in my opinion and even though most users said they couldn't feel the weight difference between the two , I could . Then again , I'm an older guy and light feels right .

Thank you dirt doctor. You are right, it must be the coil. The problem is, if I make a move to one side, I have to stop much earlier to change the direction. I can not imagine doing it for hours in the woods, where I would have to lift the coil. "Swingy thingy" would help, if the weight of the detector was the only problem. I have to think about it. Thank you.

I made an experiment and placed the 13" Detech coil on the Deus rod (without the other Tejon parts of course). What can I say, it feels (at least at home) much better, so to an extent it is the coil, but the additional weight of the Tejon plays also a part. If I could take the "other Tejon parts" and place it somehow on the Deus rod, it should be a big improvement. The weight of 8x1,5V batteries is about 7,5 oz. I wonder how much weight could this solution save...
