Best coil for x-terra 50

7centsworth

Well-known member
I have an x-terra 50 with stock coil and 6'' 18.75 and they do not id well past 4 or 5 inches I was wondering if any of the other coils work better.

I just bought the 10.5 dd coil for my XT 70 and I love it. It's going to be deeper than your stock coil. It does add a little more weight to the unit, but well worth it! I think the same coil will work with your 50.

Bill M-----Turn that 10.5 DD half way around on the shaft.---Looks a little different (wierd) at first but it still works great and gives the Xterra better balance with that coil.----I don't take credit for this idea-Randy talked about doing it a long time ago.--I did a straight shaft mod on the Xterra but the coil thing worked the best (better balance).-------Del

Basically lower frequencies for deep silver and higher frequency for gold jewelry, DD or Concentric, your ground and finally dial in personal preferences. The nice part Mnelab gives you a lot of options..Might bring up the subject at a club meeting to see what the fellows use for your neck of the woods. Personally the stock 7.5 gives good all around performance for general coin shooting but thats just one lowly opinion and others may differ...In my opinion after lugging around heavy units over the years XT units feel light and well balanced and Minelab has come a long way in offsetting the heavy Explorer series thus giving us more choices..

What sensitivity do you run at 7cents? The stock has always been accurate for me to at least 8-9". I'm in Southern IL, 45 miles from Henderson, KY, so our soil should not be drastically different.

I've got an XTERRA 50 myself and the 2 coils you have are the 2 I prefer ( I don't want anything heavier on it ) .I've found that in the ground I hunt in I had the same problem with ID'ing depth that you do .So what I do now is not to use what the ID is telling me but listen to the tones, the strenght of those tones and the repeatability of those tones .I get faked out with false tones once in awhile but I find my brain can ID a couple of inches deeper than the machine does this way .I like the distinctive tones of the EXTERRA'S and the lighter weight .When I'm out for blood I will use my Explorer with a swingy thingy and the Pro Coil .

I can usually run sensitivity at 18 to 20 with no falsing.

I have recently bought the 6" HF coil (haven't done a lot of hunting with it yet) but notice that a lot of people favour the 6" LF coil, does this coil work on the X-terra 50 ?

Actually, Minelab doesn't make a 6-inch coil in the low frequency (3 kHz). The 6-inch concentric is 7.5 kHz and will work on any of the X-Terras. The 6-inch DD coil is 18.75 kHz and will work on all of the X-Terra models except the X-30. The lower frequency (3 kHz) is only available in a 9-inch concentric. It works on the X-70, X-505 and X-705. HH Randy

It depends on what you are searching for. I have a x-70, and have 3 coils. The standard (18khz), the small (18khz) for areas with lots of trash and my favorite, the 3khz. I also own the Safari, which is a great detector and goes deep, but if your looking for coins, the x-series with the 3khz is hard to beat. I have dug coins giving a solid signal with my x-70 using the 3khz coil at 8 inches easy.

I very rarely remove my 3KHz from my X-70.

well i have the 18.75 klhz 9" concentric and it rocks. Good on jewlry and coins. I think out of the 3 frequencys this one the best because lower ones probably wont hit the jewlry and trinkets as well. Plus this one hits well on coins too
