Best coil for depth in good dirt

I went relic hunting in TN yesterday and I gotta say I'm loving this X-terra 70 more and more (more than the MXT). I know this question has probably been pounded to death, but I can't find a thread on it, so I'm gonna ask. In good dark brown, low mineralization dirt would the 18.75 concentric give better depth than the stock coil on non ferrous targets, the size of a dime (cuff button, small bullet, etc.)? Its been my experience that DD coils in good dirt do not give as good a depth as an equivalent size concentric coil, so I gotta assume that my 10.5, MF DD coil is probably going to get about the same depth as my MF stock coil in this good dirt, even though its a little larger. Is that a correct assumption?

TIA,
Bill W.

Same here.

In general the same size dd coils do not punch as deep as round concentrics. BUT! My 10.5 HF DD coil whips my stock coil in depth. I believe this has been proven in the past by others? Maybe it's because you can run it a little hotter? Maybe not? I know if I want to dig some deep holes then the 10.5 DD coil will get the nod. Running the DD coil at just #10 sensitivity on the Xterra 70 will get you down 7 to 8 inches easy. I would be afraid to run the sens at 30! I was just thinking yesterday that once I pull all the targets out of my favorite places with the stock and 6 inch dd coil - I would put the depth hound 10.5 coil on and see what I left. I mostly run the 10.5 HFDD coil in the volleyball courts. Man you can cover the sand fast. Plus scoop some deep targets! Some are below the sand in the dirt! I pass on those as I'm a little lazy!

Canewrap...gee I wish I knew real name....I find the 10.5 DD 7.5KHz coil to be the ideal coil for relic hunting and coin shooting. I hunt in highly mineralization soil and on the beaches with this coil with great results. There is no question that it goes deeper than the stock coil. TomB

I have always read that the lower the frequency the deeper the signal. I wonder if there will ever be a Low frequency 10.5 DD coil?

I always understood that the larger the coil, the deeper the signal.

Its a little different with DD coils in that the detection field is not a cone, but rather spreads into the ground more like a bowl shape. A concentric coils gets better depth in good ground, but the DD coil works better in mineralized ground.

I would think the low frequency 9" concentric coil will give you that extra depth you need. Never used one, but something I learned from reading forums (low frequency = extra depth).

My two primary coils I use are the 10.5MF and the 9"LF. The 10.5 is deeper for sure. The LF 9" is nice because it is less sensitive to iron. I think the 10.5 is a bit deepr than the 9"LF and you get better ground coverage
