Best Christmas present ever !!! BLING BLING

Found this the day after Christmas at a local school yard playground...2 inches down under the wood chips...needless to say.. as i moved around the chips ..and say it laying on its side..i saw gold..then picked it up and looked at the stones..I sat back on the ground and just couldn't find any words to express my awe and excitement. The first thing on my mind was ...oh my God...it finally happened ....found something good...and after getting it appraised and checked..its a 3/4 solitaire oval cut..FLAWLESS..no inclusions at all.. the gemologist said it was the cleanest whitest diamond he had seen in a good long while..also has 8 princess cut stones (4 on each side)..total weight is .80 and appraised out at $7500. He asked me if I wanted to sell it...I paused for a minute and thought ..nope gonna have it made into a ring for myself. Before getting it appraised, I took it to a local jeweler in a pawn shop to have them check it to see if it was real or CZ. All I could think was that it was a CZ..as I have found several in the past that were only CZ. The guy pulled out his loop and said it was real but that it had several inclusions that would ruin the value of it..he did offer me $1000 for it ..I thought a moment ...almost took it ..glad I didn't. Word to the wise...stay away from pawn shops !!!! I won't be wearin it to the beach though when I go water detecting LOL. What a Christmas present to myself !!!!

MAN! How could someone lose that at a schoolyard?! GREAT find Rocky! Aaron

I know it's out there, but I have not put my coil over it yet. When I do I may jump out of my wetsuit. Scary thought huh?

Beautiful find and my wife said she would even take it. Some of my better finds have been in the sawdust chip piles at playgrounds. Actually it is one of the first places we hit when going to a park.

I realize that we as hobbyists want to keep everything that we find, especially the unbelievable stuff such as this. I am no exception but one thought kept coming to my mind and that is there is some poor wife or grandmother out there truly heartbroken that she lost it. A bed of wood chips in a local playground might make it a little easier to locate the owner as compared to a big, sprawling beach that is covered in tourists. I certainly will never pass any sort of judgement on any detectorist that decides to keep anything that they've found but most newspapers will publish lost and found items in the classifieds at no charge. A rightful owner will be able to identify it easily and if no one should claim it in a week or two the I could rest easily knowing that I did the best I could to return it. Now, besides that, it could be remounted into a beautiful ring, one that you could be very proud of. Whatever you decide, congratulations on a spectacular find and I hope it works out for you in the end.

If someone advertises a lost item with location and description, sure. I also would think I'm entitled to a reward for my honesty in returning a valuable item.
Unless I happen to be the sort of person who enjoys a "thanks" for returning an item worth hundreds, even thousands of dollars.
After a few of those episodes, most people will begin to suspect they're being used as a free recovery service. believe me, it can happen.
If I know the owner of an item, sure, I would return it, but I'm not going on an odyssey to do so.
Several years ago, I found a wallet with 70.00 in it, I found and at my expens, mailed eveything to the owner. Not even a thank you did I receive. I called the dirt bag up after three weeks, told him who I was. he said "oh yeah", thats all.
I told him "don't lose it again" I didn't mention that next time it's mine.
Thats my take on it.

Bottomfeeder, I agree with you man. If someone wants to pay my labor bill for recovery, then we can talk. They can't afford me I assure you. You lose it, it's mine!

I'm one step ahead of ya...I contacted the local police dept and placed an ad in the city paper ..as of yet no replies...I'm in no hurry to jump into resetting the diamonds into another ring for myself. I will make every attempt to find the owner before jumping into anything. thanx for asking.

Rick

Yeah it sure was...I almost believed him...glad I didnt fall for it. I figured I would give it another week or so and if I don't get any replies from the owner describing it in detail to me..then it's MINE !!! I will tell you ..when I found it, it was buried under 3 inches of dirt and 2 inches of wood chips.. and was caked up with hard dirt..which leads me to believe it's been there for a good while. I'm not an insensitive person..it is my intention to find the owner if possible..but it's also not such a good idea to advertise too much out there that I have a $7500 dollar diamond ring sitting around the house. There are crazy people who will do the unthinkable sometimes to get at something like this. So I will just let it go at that and see what happens. Thank all of you for your posts.

I understand your premise, Rick. You ideas are valid.

As I have churned this, some questions have come out of foggy mist of what I call my mind.

The question I have is: Doesn't the person who loses a $7500 ring have the option and/or the obligation to seek and recover it? When a person decides that they will no longer pursue a lost object, do they relinquish the rights to it?

I realize that I am asking a more legal than moral question. I also realize that there is possibly more than one explanation as to how the ring ended up in the playground, but, let's assume that it was a simple case of losing it while pushing a child on a swing.

If I had lost a $7500 ring, I would consider where I had been and, if it were a playground, I would either 1) call someone with a metal detector, 2) call a detecting club, 3) put a want ad in the local paper offering to pay for the services of a detectorist or, 3)go to my local hobby shop and buy a $250 detector and hunt for it.

It is quite possible that the person who could afford a $7500 ring would also have the means to have it properly insured. If they had been paid by their insurance company for the loss and then had the lost ring returned to them, would they return the insurance money to the insurer?

I've hunted for several items like this in the past and it's easy to determine, after asking a few questions, that the person I'm talking to has no earthly idea where this thing could possible be. I often hear....
"I don't know, I just looked down at my hand and it was gone....."
Now, with you acting as a detective, where do you start?

therick

Yeah, that's pretty much a hopeless scenario from the start.

I have no answer for anyone who finds something of value. Each of us is into this hobby for any variety of reasons. It is the nature of this hobby to seek and find. Anything beyond that point is a matter of choice.

:detecting:Finally got my appraisal back...after the gemologist told me that he estimated the value of my ring at $7500 which just about floored me right outta the chair, the official result was at $2750, wayyyyyyy lower..a real disappointment ..guess I shouldn't complain too much since it was a good find..and I'm happy with that..just that what he initially told me and what it ended up to be were way off...Oh well..it's going into a new setting as we speak..I'll post the final result when I get the diamonds remounted. Thanks to all for your replies and comments. Hope everyone out there is having a BLING BLING New Year so far... Happy Hunting to all
