Best Cheap Tesoro Mod I Ever Made

Sven

Well-known member
I have been switching out my s-rod foam grips that were installed by the factory.
Factory grips are pretty cheap construction as well as being thin walled.
They do the job................... but, are they really comfortable?
You really can't answer this unless you switch out the grip with ones similar to
what I have pictured. You won't believe the difference a different grip makes, it's
hard to explain. Can tell you it sure feels like a different detector, actually feels more
balanced and lighter. Controls are easier to work, 100% better feel and tons more
comfortable. If you thought you liked your Tesoro before........switch grips.

I bought my grips at Canadian Tire, $6.00 a pair. They can be found in the bike dept.
You should be able to find similar grips at bike shops, Walmart etc.

Grip position pictured on the Eldorado feel the best.

Good to know they can be gotten at bike shops. Thanks for the heads up.

That certainly looks more comfortable. My straight shaft, angled side handle Amigo is going to get one i do believe. Question Sven, you have a new eldorado, have you ever used an older big box, and if so, comparison maybe? Eldo going to get new grip too.

Haven't used an older big box Tesoro unit. Thought about getting one to see what they are like, as I missed out on the Tesoros
during the time period they were made. Can tell you I do just fine using some of the other brand big box units. They still have plenty
of depth if hunting in VLF mode. If it's a TR discriminator, they don't have the depth of todays units. But if your hunting within
the first 6", they are fine.

Thanks for the excellent advice, Sven. I always enjoy seeing your mods.

I've been using Sram bicycle tape and you're right, a better grip makes a nice difference.

Are the grips you use tight enough to hold on securely by themselves or do you add adhesive?

:starwars: The grips I used were a fight to get on, slow going. I didn't use any lube to get them to slide easier.
A drop or two of dishwashing soap in some water would have made it easier. But I wanted to use some adhesive
anyways after they were in position. Didn't want to have to wait until the liquid evaporated.

To answer your question, the grip grabbed so well that adhesive probably was not needed.

Neat idea Sven but I can't help but to see that your new grip looks alittle dirt.... do you actually use that Eldorado  Just messin with you, I know the Eldo is one great detector (as all Tesoro's are). Steve.

P.S. I have a Compadre on its way to me, want to see what it will sniff out at the tot lots.

Yes, I do use it........hate getting it dirty. Need some covers or seals for my toggle switches.......
You know I would love to get another Tesoro, resisting the urge, yeah right.
I do think the Eldo would make a nice water machine.....sounds like a project to me..if I find another
used one cheap....my answer to Garrett's AT Pro (minus LCD ID display). You know a Compadre might make a great
water machine searching for gold chains, there's a thought, everyone is missing the gold chains lost in the swimmin
areas. Guess I'll make a new post.

Hairspray is what bike shops regularly use to spray inside the grips to slide them on and to add some 'sticky' once they are in place.

Thanks, Sven and Monkeywrangler. As a non-cyclist I would have never known they used hairspray but it makes a lot of sense.

I'll be trying it in the near future on my small coil Compadre.

Will make life easier on my hands and wrists next time I put on a new grip
