Best battery for Pin Pointer?

BigTony

Well-known member
I purchased a Garrett Pin Pointer just about two years ago and after the first battery replacement I can't seem to get the right battery. Or this thing needs repair.
I tried several batteries and no sooner did I load them and turn it on - I get the alarm that the battery is low.
I purchased EBL 9v 600 mAh batteries and charger. These work fine in other pin pointer that I have but not in the Garrett.

Before I contact support I want to try another battery - So which 9 volt battery should I use?

Sounds like a pointer problem to me. Are the contacts clean where battery sits? Are you saying that was the first battery change? I have used all types in mine and no problems.

Yes. You want a Premium battery in it.
Duracell, Energiser Eco Advanced.
That 600 mah just a kitten!
Speaking of cats, the Ever Ready 'black cat' 9V that ships with it should be recycled and not used... doesn't last long and can give wrong impression that it's broken!

Not the first battery but some I bought didn't work. So what you are all saying is they are all weak from the start.
I'll have to buy better ones. Thanks

Des, thanks, I'll try one of those this week. The original battery that came with it lasted a good long time but it wasn't a name brand and I didn't write it down either.

Fortaleza, the contacts look fine to me but maybe I should use a magnifier to get a better look.

I tried the Energizer Max today and it is working good. I feel dumb now but I will have to use it and see how long it lasts just for ha ha ha's.

Thanks everyone.

Don't skimp on batteries. Some of the off brand are different lengths and won't make good contact. Stick with the good stuff and you'll be happier.

The "9VDC" LI-Po battery will have a nominal voltage of 7.4 VDC, NOT 9VDC as an alkaline battery has.

There are 2 Li-Po cells inside the case, each has a nominal voltage of 3.7VDC, along with a bucking circuit board.
An alkaline battery has 6 cells each with a nominal voltage of 1.5VDC which will give a 9VDC output.
A Ni-MH battery will have 6 cells each with a nominal voltage of 1.2VDC which will give a 7.2VDC output.

This is why manufacturers sometime do not recommend using rechargeable batteries in their device. Especially if they did not design the device to function on the lower voltage.

From the Pro-Pointer AT manual:
Battery Life:
Carbon: 16 hours
Alkaline: 30 hours
Rechargeable: 8 hours

There are a few good YouTube videos on the Li-Po batteries
HiTech 9V Li-ion battery: teardown, repair and test
and
Soshine charger & 9V Li-Po battery teardown ( they also teardown the EBL battery)

My advice for a Pin-Pointer is to use a good grade Alkaline, for everyday use in a detector Li-Po are for me in the ATPro, NOT THE ATX at this time, maybe in the not so distant future.

Big T, I would try a good/new battery put it in hold it in place with cover off and turn on the pointer and see if it acts the same way. That way you have a good contact.

I understand batteries and thanks for the lesson in battery voltage but this thing just eats batteries, or drains the voltage.
New carbon battery lasted 15 minutes then set off the low voltage alarm.

I tried two new batteries, Energizer MAX - one lasted 15 minutes the second didn't even work two minutes. I sent Garrett an email today.
Thanks for all of the replies.

I contacted Garrett yesterday and Maureen said to send it in for repair. Great customer service - she replied to my email first thing this morning.

Thanks all for tried to help me. I love this device and hope it will be fine for a real long time.
