Best all around coil for the early sovereigns?

New member
Would like some opinions from experienced users. I'm using a 10" tornado coil on my original sovereign. I just purchased the 8" Coin Search coil brand new from David at Dixie Metal Detectors. I'm basically using the machine for coinhunting in old parks and the surounding woods.
Thanks,
Gary

Use the 10" , if you find it nulls a lot due to lots of iron change to the 8"

the Sun Ray S8 for land and the S12 for the beach is the best coils iv owned for my GT.the coin serch coil is great but i dont think they are water proof!

I like the 8" Coinsearch far better then the stock 10" coil, better seperation, and as good or better depth. S12 works great for the beach.

I feel the 8 inch coinsearch is the best to learn a Sovereign with as the tones seem to linger on a little more give a newbie a better signal on good targets. The S-8 of Sun Rays is probably the best 8 inch coil you can get, but I recommend this coil to those that are more experienced with know the tones. The reason is it will separated better, but the signals are not as long and drawn out in my opinion. Now for a larger coil the 10 inch Tornado coil does impress me much more than the 10 BBS coils Minelab was using and have used this coil more than any of the other coils. Now if you want a bigger coil than the S12 of Sun Rays is by far the best bigger coil I have ever used for land hunting.
If you have the 10 inch Tornado coil on your Sovereign and have one of the new Coinsearch coils coming from David I feel you will have a good combo and should do well.

@ Rick, Have you tried the new SEF 15x12, till now the Wot 15" performed best here on the beach although too big for inland trashy areas where i use the 10" tornado but the SEF is better on both sites

HI If you can get a sun ray 12in coil the white one you will be VERY pleased with the results. That is my number 1 coil for coins. Does it all even in trash. Found more good deep coins even on edge with it than any other coil. Harry

These were heavier than the new S-12, but they did work good and was the coil I found my deepest coin with back a few years ago. The new S-12 is lighter and waterproof too that the white one was not and the performance a slight edge to the new black one. Back in 1996 when I became a Minelab and Sun Ray dealer this Sun Ray 12 inch coil was what everyone wanted and not the 11 inch Coinsearch coil Minelab made, but now many want the 11 inch Coinsearch coil as many were not sold, but the Sun Ray seem to beat it with no problem and neither were waterproof back then either.

I couldn't have said it better myself, and I still have my original 8" inch CoinSearch. I've used it all over the country including Mexico. Saltwater beaches too. When their all gone the Sun Ray 8 inch is the only thing I'd use. Take a look at what used CoinSearch and Sun Ray coils bring on the secondary market. A used S/R S-12 costs $219.95 new. Used ones regularly bring $175-$185. That should tell you something about their quality. Same for the CoinSearch. There is something within them that gives my Sov's (all of them) the great depth I'm used to. And the tones are like Rick said. Good hunting, David@Dixie
