Best 10.5" DD coil for seperation

I read a post by a guy recently that stated he chose the 10.5" HF DD over the MF because of its ability to pick up a Civil War button amidst some nails vs. the MF not being able to pick it up. Has anyone ever had a similiar experience? Starting to look like I need to use my MF 10.5" DD to hunt open fields and switch to the HF once I'm in the camp, where there's generally a lot of nails. I wouldn't ask this after reading the other guy's experience, but my philosophy is generally one of trust, but verify.

TIA,
Bill

Yes the HF DD is much better at seperating than MF,it is the coil I use most in iron laden sites, use a VERY slow sweep and dig any repeatable signal from -2 up if you want to find all non ferrous,if you want silver coins I would dig any repeatable signal from about 30 as if a coin is masked by iron it will drag down the ID number a lot.

I use the 10.5DD 7.5kHz coil for relic hunting. I'm not willing to give up the extra depth of the DD coil because of a few nails. I reject -2 through -10 which takes care of the smaller iron objects and using pattern 1 I keep on swinging. HH TomB

I have the 5 X 10 and the 6" HF DDs and the little coil will fit into trash that the 5 x 10 will not. Based on the difference between my HFs and the stock MF, I'll bet he runs the machine differently in camp. I have found that I dig more iron with the HF coils.
Dude I have not ran either coils. However, I find it hard to believe that the two 10.5 DD coils could be that much different in terms of their output signal size. I understand the freq makes a difference, but ???

Anyone else
Jeff

I'm starting to think that the very thing I didn't want the HF coil for, tendency to pick up real small metal, may be what allows it to see a small area of a good target under nails and report it back, if even for a brief second. I'm in the process of re setting up my target garden. We moved a few months back and I'm gonna play with the 6" DD to see how much depth I can coax out if it. If it will reliably report a high tone on something at 8", then I'm set and will be my coil of choice in an established picket post or camp with a lot of iron. If its iffy at that depth I'm gonna try and get a HF 10.5" and see if it will do it better.

Whoa now,
That isn't what I was saying. I think that if I was going to get a 10.5 it would be the MF. My suspicion is that the 2 10.5s will have the same signal size. and I think that the 6" DD will hit targets in the tight stuff is because it is so darned small.

Now I will be curious to know how much depth you can get out of the 6" and post back in if you do get the 10.5 HF I would like to know how it handles.

As soon as I find a good used one or scrape together enough money I'll do a thorough side-by-side comparison to see which one seperates better.

I've used them both, side by side, and really don't see any difference in "separation". There is, however, a difference in how they respond to specific targets and the "smoothness" of the audio tone that specific targets produce. As with the other coils, the higher frequency is a bit more sensitive to lower conductive targets. And the lower frequency is a bit more sensitive to higher conductive targets. In my opinion, if the buttons you are looking for have a higher conductivity than the nails in the area (which I would assume they do), then the MF will "hit" the buttons harder. On the other hand, the HF should hit the nails harder. In other words, nails will make a more solid tone using the HF coil, compared to the MF coil. Even with some of the ferrous targets rejected. I know that it might not make sense to use a coil that makes a more solid tone on nails. But some guys hunt by audio differences (like I do with the 3 kHz concentric) opposed to rejecting certain notches. Recognizing the audio differences between the buttons and nails might be what he is going by? And the higher freq is definitely going to be more sensitive to the more ferrous targets, such as nails. JMHO. HH Randy
